Department of Education gone?

Great stuff, I was thinking the same thing, but each and every idea has an opposite choice... I don't think they'll do anything with the USDOE, they're finding ways to save cash, yet they've not fully looked into this by doing a second or third opinion/research.

Same here, that's why people nowadays are lucky as they have alternative credit providers, back in the day, only CLEP/DSST was available until StraighterLine came about, or WGU for that matter. Then other providers joined in and so did some institutions, when WGU was being investigated for CBE/accreditation, some even pulled out of the CBE arena, like Hodges U-Power.

It was in the '70s and you can thank the Department of Education and Federal student loans for the current situation.

Yeah back in the 70's you could afford a house on a single income. Housing was affordable with wages. That hasn't been the case in many decades. A lot changed economically in this country when Reagan became president and his trickle down nonsense that has never worked.

Don’t you see? The Department of Education caused inflation. Once they are destroyed we will be living in paradise.

The 80's were great and my parents had a house on a single income. "Trickle down" is a pejorative term invented by people who do not understand economics which had nothing to do with current student loan debt. There have been 20 years of Democratic presidential rule since Reagan.

Tuitions would drop like a rock if you abolished federally funded student loans.

Correction: Federally funded student loans from the DOE caused college tuition inflation.

Now that is hilarious! By any chance do have any ocean front property for sale in Death Valley? I've been looking for awhile. I'd like to feel like I'm taking a bath when I swim as opposed to the feeling like you're walking into an ice cube tray we have up here.

Some tough pills to swallow:

His own administration used the term “trickle down economics”

There have been sixteen years of Republican presidents since Reagan.

Your own parents greatly benefitted from government subsidized education.

Bloated administrative fees and greed are leading to the college unaffordability crisis. Colleges are being run like a business rather than a services. Loans are just a symptom of this.

If the DOE is eliminated people will be forced to take predatory student loans, which will lead to further financial woes.

Quote where Reagan used the term to describe his economic policy which was supply side economics.

Whatever nonsense you believe about Reagan's economic policy could have been "undone" by Clinton and Obama but they never did.

My mother got a degree in education and worked exactly one year as a teacher, then was a homemaker and never used it again. My father put himself through college with no help from anyone, including his parents who were against him going and he supported the entire family comfortably for decades.

You have zero understanding of basic economics. The only reason colleges can charge their current tuition rates is because the federal government provides the money for young adults to pay for it. No bank would offer any such loan. Eliminate federally funded student loans and college tuition would drop like a rock, sure many inefficiently run schools would close and tons of useless degree programs would disappear but college would be affordable again. Using "greed" as a reason is an emotionally baseless argument.

No one is "forced" to take out loans of any kind. Borrowing exorbitant amounts of money for anything and everything has become normalized, but that doesn't mean it's a necessary, let alone good, thing.
