DETC Outstanding Graduate Program
#1
Hi,

I did a search for this but didn't find any information. My daughter was nominated as a finalist for this award. Does anyone know anything about this? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Danielle

Click here - the program has its own page on the DETC site: DETC

Here's another DETC page, showing the schools that participated in the program for 2012: Distance Education and Training Council: August 2011 Washington Memo
If you Google "DETC Outstanding Graduate" you will get 8,300 hits -- everything from names, schools' reviews of the program, Youtube videos of the presentations, etc.

Thank you for taking the time to help! She asked me to find out if there is any benefit to her in submitting her info since the deadline is tomorrow and she is helping a friend in crisis tonight. I guess the positive would be that she has something else to put on her resume but she just found she's getting a promotion in the next few months and really has no intention of looking for a job in the near future. She also has no desire be on Youtube.

I've waded through the first 12 pages of the google search and can't seem to find out if this award is generally viewed favorably or not.

Being named an "outstanding graduate" - I would think - is a plus at just about any school. And DETC is a reputable, well-known organization.

As far as Youtube goes -- I'd agree. I have no desire to appear there, either. I use it strictly for learning purposes:

(1) There is every kind of guitar teaching and performance on there - completely free - and that's been one of my hobbies for 40+ years.
(2) YouTube University - has some pretty darn good lectures, from some excellent, well-known schools. I have loads downloaded onto DVDs etc.

I think your daughter will do fine with or without the award -- but it is a valid thing. I'd say the award carries some prestige -- but maybe that doesn't interest her. She's obviously very clever, if she's been considered for it, anyway! Smile
