Clovis Classes format?
#1
Howdy all!

I'm considering taking some classes at Clovis Community College this summer, but I have a few questions. My main question deals with the format of the course. Do anyone have a source for syllabi for the course, or would be willing to send me some? I have a particular interest in science courses with labs, as these are what I am most in need of. I am curious if the courses are self-paced or if so much has to be each week.

I am also curious if summer tuition is the same for both residents and non-residents, but I can't seem to find anything online that says either way.

I am going to be signing up for a couple of classes for the summer and I am debating on whether or not to sign up for just 2 classes to get a feel for it or a full 6 courses to save as much as I can. I would love to hear more about how they outline their courses and I will be calling next week for get more information. I did call about the science labs and they did tell me that everything was online so that was promising.

The tuition information is on their website, Your College Search Solution: Clovis Community College, Clovis, New Mexico (you have to pull up the course schedule to find the tuition information for that term) and the summer tuition is a great deal, $125 for up tp 7 credits, $440 for 18. Even with the $50 per course tech fee, it is a great deal.

For the fall you can get up to 6 credits at the lower rate of $125 total plus the $50 each course tech fee. I would love to know if they offer a winter term online.

Let me know if you cannot find the course info and I can email it over to you as a PDF.

I would highly recommend taking courses at Clovis. Taking 6 credits/semester even for non-residences, comparable to CLEPs. They are NOT self-paced but do-able for a full time employed person if you do 2 courses a semester. As for science/lab, currently taking BIOL-113, no proctor exam needed.

Clovis feedback--currently taking 2 classes there, one of which I will have to withdraw from.

PHILOSOPHY is fine, standard class, quite bit of reading and writing with one power point presentation due.

SPANISH I am going to have to drop because I was not aware I needed a proctor for the final exam, which would have been okay except I had only 10 days to find one and cannot do so. Also, the instructor is running almost 3 weeks behind in terms of getting my grades back to me and that's just tooooo long to wait and find out how well I am doing....by the time of the final only 1/2 of the semester work will be back in my hands.....very bad system for me knowing how well I am doing and where I need to improve.

Just curious, are there any type of lectures you get to watch for Clovis courses?

Hello All,

First time post, very excited about all that I have learned here on the forums !

Lex,

Can you expand a little on the Clovis spanish course? Classes I have been in at B&M schools always centered on spoken word, I'm curious how they translate this to an online format. Are there a lot of videos to watch ? Other than the lack of a proctor what are the challenges of this format for a foreign language ?

Thanks,

Mike

Spanish classes from Clovis do require a proctor. If you want more information you could call the school and talk to Mrs Lorenza Hernandez she is the teacher of all the Spanish classes offered online. Everybody at Clovis is very professional and very willing to help. Good luck!

edit: I emailed several course leaders. Some have already been kind enough to reply with their assessment requirements; they seem a friendly bunch Smile I have combined their responses with a review of the provisional syllabus (syllabi?). The list below contains courses which are assessed by Essay, Project, Open Book Quiz or otherwise do not require a proctor. Useful information for those of us outside the US or otherwise have difficulty in arranging proctoring.

No proctor required:
-------------------
BIOL 113 - Biology for General Ed/Lab
BIOL 115 - Human Biology and Lab
BIOL 211 - Human Anatomy and Physiology I/Lab*
BIOL 212 - Human Anatomy and Physiology II/Lab*
CHEM 113 - Chemistry for Gen Ed/Lab
CIS 107 - Internet Fundamentals
CIS 150 - Excel
CIS 170 - Powerpoint
CRJU 102 - Intro to Criminal Justice*
CRJU 110 - Intro to the Corrective System**
CRJU 141 - Criminal Investigation*
CRJU 201 - Criminology*
CRJU 243 - Juvenile Justice*
CRJU 260 - Organised Crime*
CRJU 262 - Terrorism*
PSCI 102 - American National Government*
REL 202 - Women of the Bible*
REL 293 - Men of the Bible*
SOC 215 - Child, Family and Community*

*Not confirmed by course leader, but explicitly described as assessed by essay, etc in provisional syllabus.
**First Midterm explicitly states, "Open Book", but second Midterm does not.

Any other additions to this list, please?

lexiiam, does the philosophy class you mentioned require a proctored exam?

To get the syllabus for any class at Clovis (and see the list of required textbooks, too), just do a search for "syllabus" on their website.

The list for the fall semester is here:

Fall Schedule

So amazing. So simple. You'd think other colleges would do the same (I'm thinking specifically of my local community college).

Just curious....Does the Clovis Spanish course offer you as many as 12 credits such as the CLEP exam?
