College classes in high school, Transfer Policy?
#1
Lightbulb
Hello,
Can a high school student in 11th and 12th grade receive automatic credit acceptance from institutions like Excelsior if they complete all college general education requirements at Sophia for instance?
Is it possible for this student to start in 9th grade?
Many Thanks,

It's not exactly automatic but, yes, if they take the appropriate courses for their degree that are on the transfer list (which classes are accepted from Sophia at Excelsior) they can start in 9th grade earning their gen eds. There is no guarantee that things won't change between now and the time they apply but that's true for adults too.

That's not exactly how it works; Excelsior does not offer "automatic credit acceptance" whatever that is (I've never heard that phrase before).

If your high school student wants to enroll at Excelsior, they can - there are no age limits to enroll there.  BUT, you cannot graduate from Excelsior until after you graduate from high school, whenever that is (for instance, most graduate around 18, but if you're a homeschooler, you might graduate at 16 or 17 instead, if that's what you as a parent decided to do).

There is no "benefit" to taking courses at Excelsior as a high school student - no discounted dual enrollment courses are offered there - so I'm guessing most people wait until after high school graduation to enroll.

Also, there is now a deterrent to enrolling there early (really, before you're ready to graduate): Excelsior is going to start charging $300 to evaluate your courses that you transfer in.  Meaning, you apply and send in credits, they do 1 free evaluation and then after that, everything is going to cost you.  So, you are much better off waiting until you have taken ALL of the credits you want to bring in before enrolling.  A $300 charge each time you want an evaluation is a steep price to pay.

@pilot, how young is the student? Are they in 9th grade or going into 9th grade this Sept?  It won't really matter actually...  If the child is 13 years old, you can sign up for the bulk of the ACE/NCCRS providers we recommend to get credit.  Basically, the student can start obtaining credit towards an associates or bachelors, the ideal age to start is at 13 years due to COPPA, some providers have an even stricter age requirement of 16, up to 18.

Having said that, if they're 12 or younger, there is a workaround.  Here are three threads and specific posts of mine, you may want to review the entire thread, as there is a link to a lengthy reply for students to start from as early as the beginning of high school.  If you have further questions, you can reply to this thread with any inquiries you have.
