Certifications for IT
#1
Does anyone know what if certifications count towards degrees? My son wants IT degree and wants to get certified in a few areas. Before he does this we want to know if it will count towards credit at Tesu?

TESU does not really accept IT certifications for credit, with some very limited exceptions (https://www.tesu.edu/academics/cal/apr.c...technology)

WGU is by far the best option if you want your IT certs accepted, but Excelsrior and COSC will also take a handful of them.

Also, WGU's tuition includes the certification exams for a few well-known certs. So he could enroll there and do the certifications during the degree.

How many credits will count towards certifications? He’s got several clep, ace and dsst, will certifications still count? Do you know if technical writing will count for one English?

Certifications counting wouldn't be related to the CLEP/ACE/DSST unless I guess he had something like 120 credits total.

How many count depend on what school. Probably 0 at TESU, like jsd said.

There's no way for us to tell you what will count where without having details.

I also root for WGU and recommend Hodges, see here for more details on how Hodges work.
These are the competency-based programs mentioned in the thread below.

A few other programs that are IT/Software Development based as well from several providers other than WGU... You should check them out!

Note: I placed Patten in there as it would be a cheap/quick RA Masters degree when/if you wanted to do one after your Bachelors.

As far as I know, Hodges, Capella, NAU, and UW Flex don't accept IT certs. Patten doesn't have an IT program, they have an MBA with an IT concentration that is 4 IT management courses. If the goal is to transfer in certs to an IT program, these are all bad suggestions.

He’s looking for hardware degree. We thought Tesu was the best way to go.

I'm not an expert on the various IT degrees (especially hardware), but around here, it's pretty common to suggest WGU. It is probably your best bet for getting certs accepted, and will certainly be the cheapest of any of the Big 3.

BTW- when you say a hardware degree, what does that mean? You need to specify which degree he wants to get (I'm assuming that TESU's BA in IT is NOT a hardware degree, at least, it doesn't sound like it to me).
