I'm still struggling with CSU-Pueblo to have the english placement exam waived.
Now Penn Foster looks more attractive.
Can anyone confirm if there is a required proctored exam with this course?
Also, any chance for an international number rather than just the 800 number (can I just dial the general number on their website?)

Well, I got myself registered today for the CSU-Pueblo ENG 101 course after they accepted my 5 year old SAT verbal score in lieu of the ACCUPLACER English placement test. Still waiting to hear from the instructor...

All PFC courses require a proctored final exam, but they are pretty liberal about the proctor.
Quote:The proctor must be someone who holds at least an associate degree in any field, who is not related to you, and who does not reside with you. He or she must also be in good standing in the community. All proctor candidates are still subject to the school's final approval.
The course layout is as follows:
Quote:English Composition
The Basics
The Writing Process
Descriptive Writing
Narrative Writing
Reflective Writing
Proctored Exam
PFC actually has an international version of its website linked at the top in case you missed it:

Update:
CSU Pueblo said that even though I had excellent scores on my ACT in grammar and english comprehension, they are from 1993, and they won't accept anything older than 5 years. I guess that means as we get older our english skills get much more badder
Anyway, they have given CLEP as an option to meet the pre-req, but I'm waiting for them to confirm which CLEP and if the essay is required. Will update when I know more...
Waiting for this to work itself out before I decide to go the Penn Foster option
cheerio!

ridin8ude,
That's great news then! Make sure they put it in writing when they answer you...just for "CYA" purposes!

Latest update:
CSU-Pueblo require the Accuplacer test for their Eng 101 course.
The test they focus on is the Sentence structure test.
It features about 20 questions, and I think can be done in less than 30 minutes.
They are charging $5 bucks for it, and they are pretty lenient with a proctor. They are letting my HR manager do it (since my boss works overseas). But this means to me that anyone anywhere could be the proctor.
Accuplacer details:
The ACCUPLACER Tests
Good news for me, easier and cheaper than a CLEP. Hope to get this sorted out and completed by next Wednesday.
Update when I have more news...

ridin,
Do you know how you get the actual test?? Does it have to be mailed to you or sent directly to your proctor (like the TECEP's)? In any case, this class definitely sounds like it will work out well for you and for the others who are looking at it as an option for meeting Excelsior's WER requirement.
Thanks for keeping us updated!

I'm registered in the CSU-Pueblo: ENG 101 class. It's been a full week today and I haven't heard from the instructor. I'd emailed her and even left voicemails with a query regarding submitting assignments since the syllabus somehow indicates that the assignments need to be submitted via snail mail (which obviously becomes more time-consuming). I've my fingers crossed still!
Meanwhile, I have started working on the 1st assignment after my books came in this Monday. Got a fair deal on both of 'em, "A World of Ideas" & "Rules for Writers" at half.com

srijay - you got a pm from me
Update from this saga:
CSU-Pueblo sent my colleague an email with the details of what is required to be a proctor. It's really simple stuff.
Once I've paid the $5 dollar fee, Irene from CSU will send my proctor a link with username and password that she can log into on ANY computer, and set up the exam online for me.
So it's all electronic, I get the results instantly, I have to fax a copy of the results back to CSU, and if I have passed I can go ahead with the English class. There are only 20 questions, and I need to get a 74%, but it's not clear how this is calculated for this exam. It looks like childs play, but I'd had to underestimate it too...
Hope to take the accuplacer test before the end of next week

Hey All,
To those who are currently enrolled in the CSU English Comp course, how are you coming along?
What is the course like? What are the assignments? Are you scoring high on the assignments so far? Are you finding them difficult to complete, or relatively easy? Would you recommend the course at this point?
I am trying to decide whether to go with CSU or Idaho University's pass/fail English Comp course. GPA is very important to me, and I am nervous about taking a course unless I am sure that an A is achievable given enough hard work and effort (I've had professors in the past who outright refused to ever give out A grade's).
Having said that, I would much rather have the grade than a pass/fail.
Any feedback you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys,
Snazzlefrag
My name is Rob
