Biology Degree from TESU - Is Lumerit helpful?
#31
UNE has a list of students who have had their premed courses accepted in various healthcare programs (medicine, PA, PT, etc.) UT Austin actually has a list of online and Straighterline courses that they accept for their direct entry MSN and PhD in Nursing.

All that they require for the biology masters degree program is that you have 19 hours in biology & 12 in chemistry. They don't say anything about "online" classes being unacceptable. I actually plan to take most of my core biology classes through a local community college - for dirt cheap - and 100% online (Gen Bio I & II w/ labs, Gen Chem I & II w/ labs, A&P I & II w/ labs).

The community college even offers a Pathophysiology course, but I'm considering the straighterline course for that one, as it needs to transfer as UL credit. Now, I don't know what I'm going to do about Organic Chem I & II and Physics I & II. But, I suppose I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

QUICK QUESTION: Do you guys know if the UC Berkeley extension courses are counted as legitimate, accredited college classes (not ACE credits like straighterline courses)? I just realized that a lot of my course work will be done through UC Berkeley extension, so I'm crossing my fingers that my future grad school won't have a problem with those courses. Argh....

If you're worried about the acceptance of prerequisites, then do the LL credits at NMJC, Clovis, a local community college, or Uexcel. Some schools might also accept CLEP. Do the UL credits at UC Berkeley. I don't think any school is going to be cheaper than UC Berkeley for UL credits. UNE offers LL credits that are hard to find online such as organic chemistry with lab.

While UC Berkeley is reasonably-priced, this is going to be a lot of money to pay out of pocket.

Some might not allow Uexcel? Or do they get transcribed like real college courses?

They get transcribed like an Excelsior course, but with an X at the end of the course code.

bjcheung77 Wrote:Silly_Me, which college are you going to do the Science Lab's from? I'm looking for "dirt cheap"!
As SL/Ed4credit are the cheapest ones I've seen so far, their lab kits range in $98-$250+.
I want to see how much your college will cost for out of state residents. Please and Thanks.

Sorry... I guess "dirt cheap" is a relative term. I'm taking these classes at my local community college - which is cheaper & more convenient for me than taking them at a four-year university. I would suspect that you're getting a similar deal through your SL/Ed4credit course.

To answer your question, Yenisei is correct. The capstone counts toward the 18 UL credits.

Oh, thank goodness!!!

FINAL QUESTION: So... Am I totally crazy for trying to pursue a biology degree this way (through TESU)? I'm thinking that all the money I save w/ CLEP'ing, ACE'ing, etc, for the core classes will make up for all the expensive science courses I'll need. I know it's a much more expensive degree than others (due to the science courses), but surely it will be cheaper in the end (and faster) than doing this through a four-year university - especially since I don't qualify for the Pell Grant & I don't want to take out any student loans.

Anyways... I truly appreciate all the great insights, guys!!!

I for one am confused as to your question. Are you saying that you're going to take science classes through TESU, or are you saying that you're going to take science classes at other schools (like Clovis or NMJC or RioSalado)? If you're saying that you're planning on taking anything except your capstone at TESU, then I think the CLEP/ACE/etc. will definitely not make up for the cost of those courses. TESU charges $1500/course for out of state, which is crazy expensive. But if you want to get the Bio degree at TESU, and take your classes at other less expensive schools, then yes, it's a good plan.

Oh, indeed. I'm not taking classes at TESU (except for whatever is required for the degree). I'll pay for the residency waiver & look for the classes elsewhere. I'm trying to make this as affordable as possible. Wink

Ancapman Wrote:DO doesn't have as much of a problem of CC classes as MD because the competition for DO school is lower.

Do you or anyone else know if they mind an online CC class, versus B&M CC class? By online, I mean like at Rio Salado, BYU, UNE, etc where the labs are also done fully online.
