Big 3 test out degrees 2011?
#1
I wanted to start an updated thread for the big 3 degrees and the possibility of testing out completely.

When I completed my TESC degree in 2008, the requirements were significantly different than they are now, much has changed. It got me thinking, are there any degree paths left at any of the big 3 that can be completed exclusively through testing out? I'd like to get an updated list going.

Going off of my current degree plan, here is a TESC BA in History through testing out. I added some CLEPs/DSSTs to substitute the credit I received for my military training. If someone knows that there has been updates to this plan let me know, but this is my approved plan. I also substituted ECE American Dream with the 6 SH TESC course I took. I also have an approved Degree plan for a BA in Social Sciences that can be completed throught testing out. I will post later when I get home.

With the capstone requirements at EC and COSC, I think we can rule them out for completely testing out.

lmroberts showed a while back that it's still possible to test out of a BA in Psychology at TESC. I don't think it can be done with any business degrees anymore, but a General Management BSBA at TESC can be done with testing and Straighterline Business Comms and Managerial Accounting.

Maybe it can still be done with the TESC BA in Liberal Arts and the BA in Social Sciences.

My TESC BA in Liberal Studies is completely by testing and my military credits. More tests could easily be used in place of those military credits though. As of right now TESC "highly recommends" that students take the capstone course, but do not REQUIRE it. The writing is on the wall for the capstone to be a requirement though so degrees by test out are about to be extinct IMHO.

Testing out of 117 credits and then taking ONE class is still one hell of a bargain.

BA/Liberal Studies, TESC 2011
AAS/Applied Electronic Studies, TESC 2010

I guess taking at least one class isn't that bad especially if you need to get a GPA at TESC. I had to take one just for that, 4.0 GPA.

Having no experience with EC, I only knew that they added the Info Lit requirement (1 cr) but if you take that off the table are there still other degree options? I think I read the GRE exams were over....what about business?

There's a business capstone course that must be taken with EC and cannot be tested out of, and all of the liberal arts degrees now also require a capstone course that must be taken with EC. Managerial Accounting is another EC core business course that cannot be tested out of. At first glance, it looks like an EC General Business degree can be obtained via testing except the capstone, info literacy and Managerial Accounting because the 12 upper level business elective credits required for that degree should be able to be met with the MIS DSST, the Money & Banking DSST, the Bus Law II DSST and a an UL TECEPs such as Security Analysis or Advertising.

The capstones...arg. I am cool with the capstones, but not cool with the fact that it adds at least $1k to a degree plan. Every way I calculate it, I can get a better deal for my $$ from schools other than the big 3, unless I change majors, which I am not likely to do.

I'm not sure what you mean... but I have spent more time considering what my major(s) should be than actually studying banghead At this point, I'm having fun studying Psych and Soc, so I guess I will stick to them :willynilly:
