BLS ( information technology minor) General education?
#11
Please answer this question: Most important is, how much time (hours) can you dedicate to your studies each day?

1) I have reviewed your previous posts and this is the information I have from you. From the first thread, you have your academic evaluation and it indicates you know a few languages and the language of instruction is in English for your high school + associates equivalent studies. Link: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...-any-major

2) The following thread show you the same General Education course requirements as referenced by ss20ts above. This is where you need to decide if you want to place UMPI courses on hold after this session and get permission to get more credits into UMPI before you continue with the degree. Link: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...-VS-SOPHIA

3) Depending on how well you're doing in the 4 courses you mentioned on your other thread, you might want to re-think your options. I would follow through and complete these 4 courses quickly and then whatever else you need during this session, and email for permission to "pause UMPI", and finish what you need to transfer in. Link: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...ur-courses

Note 1: If you just need a Bachelors/Masters combo, I would have previously provided you a different option than UMPI for undergrad, Excelsior would have been a good choice because you would only need 3 courses from them and transfer in the rest. And then UMPI MAOL for graduate school. You may want just get an UMPI BLS MIS and to skip grad school in favor of Google UX Design Certification and/or something similar.

Note 2: You may want to have someone at home who is more familiar with English to help you if possible, in addition to using Google Translate and anything else you have access to, such as the teachers/tutors at UMPI. Do not rush, pace yourself in getting these done. You may not finish as fast as others, but you will finish them according to your schedule. Work on the Bachelors/Certs... Good luck, have fun.

Dear bjcheung77,

Thanks for your reply. I can invest 40 hours every week to study. I dropped classes at UMPI. I talked with Jessica ( enrollment advisor) she said it’s better if I finish general education requirements with Sophia first.
You mentioned at your Note1 that Excalibur is better option for me since I need three courses with them.
If you don’t mind how it’s possible? I have 60 credits from my current bachelor degrees . I started today with Sophia.
I tried to find your reply about having different option than UMPI for getting my bachelor and masters but I I didn’t find it.
I will be very thankful if you could guide me .
I really appreciate your patience and help.

With Excelsior, you would still need 120 credits in total. You would only need to take 7 credits at the school. For a Liberal Studies degree, you could get a LOT of credits by taking all of the ACTFL exams for your native language that grant credit. As an example, someone who speaks Spanish or German as a native could get up to 12 UL credits and 24 LL credits.

You mentioned having a degree from Pakistan. What language or languages do you speak? Unfortunately, Pashto, Sindhi, Urdu, and Punjabi only grant you 6 UL and 6 LL credits each with the OPI exam from ACTFL. The OPI exam is an oral exam where you have a conversation with a person.

Thank you so much for your reply.
It’s very helpful. I had no idea I can get credits in this way. How many UL credits do I need for bachelor degree? Can I get them through Sophia. I heard it’s very easy than UMPI.
How much ACTFL cost? Btw , I already have credits for language. UMPI waive the another language requirement for me.
I am fluent in Urdu.
I appreciate your guidance.

The number of UL credits varies by degree and school. Some schools accept certain Sophia courses for UL credit.

Which degree do you want? You seem to be bouncing between UMPI and Excelsior. Both have very different requirements.

Excelsior requires 30 UL credits for a Bachelor's degree. With Urdu, you can get 6 UL credits. I think that the capstone and cornerstone at Excelsior can be worth another 6 UL credits if you transfer in enough credits.

That would leave 18 UL credits that you would need to get a Liberal Studies degree. Sophia has 3 classes (9 credits) that Excelsior might count as UL: Principles of Management, Introduction to Relational Databases, Introduction to Web Development.

The rest of the UL credits can come from: LawShelf, Davar, Study.com, Coopersmith, TECEP exams, UExcel exams.

If you have a higher budget, TESU requires fewer UL credits but it would cost more. You only need a total of 18 UL credits for TESU. 3 of these are the capstone. 6 could come from the Urdu ACTFL exam. I do not think that any Sophia courses would count as UL for a Liberal Studies degree at TESU. UL credits for TESU could come from Study.com, Coopersmith, TECEP exams, UExcel Exams.

@Sara143, please add your UMPI academic evaluation or a set of screenshots to show us what courses have been completed and what are missing.

Great news, you have so much time to complete your general education requirements!  Rachel83Az and I are introducing another option for you because of a few reasons.  Excelsior (7 credits) and TESU (6 credits) require you to only complete specific courses with them, the rest can be transferred in.

1) If you answered my question with less than 20 hours/week to do your homework and studies, this would not be ideal for competency based degree options.  I would have recommended Excelsior for you to complete a combo of ACE and NCCRS providers for both lower level and upper level requirements.

2) Because you answered 40 hours/week for your studies, you have plenty of time to continue with UMPI after you finish your gen eds.  Basically use Sophia.org, ACTFL, Study.com for the lower level and upper level requirements and complete the residency of 30 credits at UMPI afterwards.

Thanks for your replies. This is UMPI (audit)   for me. I was interested in BLS project management minor. I did not know they are offering information technology minor. Since , I want to go to tech I think UMPI is good option for me . Since they are offering IT minor.
Do UMPI want to study 30 UL with them? or they are okay If I will do 30 credits with them .
Thanks again bjcheung77 and rachel83az .

UMPI does not have a minor called information technology. Do you mean the Management Information Systems Minor? That's the closest to an IT minor UMPI has. You will be required to complete a minimum of 30 credits at UMPI. Additionally you'll need to complete the majority of the UL and minor courses at UMPI.

Do you mean do I have to complete more than 30 credits at UMPI? Additionally?
Thanks
