BA History at UMPI course requirements
#1
Hello everyone! I am going to apply for fall 2 at UMPI for History on YourPace in the next week, and wanted to check if I have these correct in what is needed for the courses. I have completed my gec and have a bunch of electives from Sophia, but was a little confused on the minimum amount of UL history courses that is needed. I posted this on r/UMPI as well.

SPA 101 SPANISH 1 (complete) (duplicate)

SPA 102 SPANISH 2 (complete)

HTY 115 WORLD CIVILIZATION 1

HTY 116 WORLD CIVILIZATION 2

HTY 161 US HISTORY 1 (complete) (duplicate)

HTY 162 US HISTORY 2 (complete)

HTY 301 MEDIEVAL EUROPE (pre)

HTY 370 ISRAEL ARAB CONFLICT (non)

HTY 350 US ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY (us)

HTY UL ELECTIVES

xxHTY 315 GREECE, ROME & THE EARLY CHURCHxx

HTY 313 EARLY MODERN EUROPE

HTY 439 THE VIETNAM WARS

HTY 489 HISTORY OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE

HTY 377 MODERN CHINA

HTY 456 FILMS OF THE COLD WAR

POS Courses

POS 101 US GOVERNMENT (complete) (duplicate)

POS 211 INTRO TO POLITICAL THOUGHT

Am I correct in using POS 101 as one of the POS courses required?
Also, is this the correct amount of minimum UL history courses required (8)? Or will I need more?

My goal is to have the minimum 10 courses to take at UMPI, if I am able to. I just found out that YourPace doesn't have HTY 315 apparently, although it is listed on their requirements. But my main questions are if POS 101 can be duplicated for one of the POS courses, and if it is 8 UL history courses total that is required for the degree, or more. Thank you for any help!

I did HTY and took all of the history classes except for slavery and modern China.  Some of the POS classes can be used for HTY UL but not both

Do world history at SL

HTY 315 is not a thing. Don’t even think they offer it on campus anymore

POS does count but I never took it. More interesting POS classes out there.

I have noticed that some of UMPI's majors don't list all the available courses. For example, the Psychology major doesn't show the animal behavior course on the UMPI website.

Avoid taking HTY 456 FILMS OF THE COLD WAR if you can since that is a super long course.

It’s not long, I did it 2-3 days. You can easily write the prompts without having to watch 20 hours of movies. The prompts are super superficial and easy to answer.

The only HTY class I found to be sort of long was Medieval Europe or International conflicts. Especially if you aren’t well versed in history already.

Yes POS 101 can just be used to cover both areas, you just only get credit once for it (3) but it will cover in GEC and Major.

For the UL History it would be 8 but 3 are specific genres:
UL History Elective (United States)
UL History Elective (non-Western)
UL History Elective (pre-Modern)
UL History - Any
UL History - Any
UL History - Any

Good to know that it is possible to do that course quickly. The student that did 20 courses in a term said that class took the longest to do at around a week.

Each person is a bit different and depending on their experience may go through certain courses faster or slower than others.

I saw that and was sort of baffled. The movies are interesting but there isn’t really a reason to sit through 20 hours of movies unless you want to.

The Vietnam Wars had a long doc that was originally done in the 80s. It’s excellent and totally worth watching all the way though. It’s a solid amount of time.

Medieval Europe is also very interesting and worth taking time to go through. I just wish the profs had lectures. YouTube videos are nice but they aren’t exactly academic.

Whether a video is seekable is also important to consider. I have noticed some History course videos are not from YouTube and may not have that functionality. Luckily, there was enough text material in the course I took to complete the milestones without relying solely on the videos.

ohhhh I really hope this transfers in. I just got my credit eval and need these two so Im gonna work on those now before term starts. I emailed transfer dept at UMPI to confirm and told them transfer database lists it. I have to enroll by Oct and I wanna get this straightened out first. Your comment makes me hopeful.
