Interesting article. First time I've heard of a state school competing in another state.
What's next? University of Michigan at New York? University of Washington at Portland?

Similar to Brandman now being UMass Global with campuses across Southern California. It's a little weird, lol

Kind of strange that they don't discuss tuition much. They mention $13k, which is higher than SDSU (they said it's $12k in the article, but that's completely false, it's closer to $8k/yr).
$13k is not a bad price, but I would want to see the campus first.
ASU is a very popular school, I'd say it's the most popular one outside of an in-state school in southern CA, mostly because it's only about 5 hours away. And, you have a much better chance of graduating in 4 years than any CA state school, which trend towards 5-6 years because they are so impacted that you can't get the classes you need each year. If you can go to a CA CC which is generally free for 2 years, and have an articulation agreement for the final 2 years, and get that for $26k, it's a decent deal.

Interesting. I always thought Californians put their UCs and CSUs on a pedestal. I would have guessed an average Californian would see ASU<CSU<UC, but perhaps based on what you say it's ASU=CSU<UC?

ASU is way better than CSU... it ranks higher, and in terms of engineering, it's only slightly behind or on par with UC schools!
Ira Fultons School of Engineering at ASU is actually one of the top engineering schools.
Its computer science graduates can get hired by Facebook, Google, Uber, Mastercard right after graduation!
CSU much much behind ASU.
If you're into IT, Computer Science, Engineering, I would recommend Ira Fultons School of Engineering at ASU any day.

That comparison may apply to 'standard' CSUs, but not to Cal Polys, which are part of the CSU system.

UC's for sure, but certainly not CSU's. We just like the price, and there is generally one that's nearby to where you live, so it's a slam dunk.
You're also assuming that nobody from CA ever goes out of state, which is far from the truth. My kid graduated 2 years ago, and about half of her friends went out of state, while the other half stayed in-state. Most of those went CC first, since it's free and easy to transfer to a CSU/UC after 2 years. But a few went straight to a CSU/UC.
I'd say that there is no single way to compare schools, since they're all different (23 CSU's and 9 UC's). Nothing applies to all of them.
In SoCal, lots of people go to ASU or UNLV if they want to stay fairly close to home.. In NorCal, lots of my friends kids go to UN Reno or Boise State if they want to stay fairly close to home. Many times they get a good discount (UNR used to give in-state tuition to lure kids out there). WUE gives good discounts as well, I think it's about 1.5x the cost of in-state tuition, and some of the schools are priced very well.

What a coincidence! I'm going for my Master's at Arkansas State University of Queretaro, Mexico! https://astate.mx/
