Has anyone taken this test with the optional essay? My school is requiring it to get the full six credits for the test, but I have no idea how the essay portion will be organized and what in particular I'll be asked to write about. The official study guide doesn't have much information on it. Will it most likely be about the different movements (Romanticism, Realism, etc), or will I be asked to pick some authors and write about their works in deeper detail, or what?

Well, I took a quick look at the CLEP website. Here is what it says:
"For the first essay, a common theme in American literature and a list of major American authors are provided. Candidates are asked to write a well-organized essay discussing the way that theme is handled in works by any two of those authors. For the second essay, candidates are asked to respond to one of two topics — one requiring analysis of a poem, the other requiring analysis of a prose excerpt. In each case, the specific poem or prose excerpt is provided and questions are offered for guidance."
If you have not checked out the exam details that are offered within the title of each exam, I would suggest always checking this section first.
