Georgia Tech Master of Science in Analytics

I didn't see a thread on this, apologies if one exists.

Has anyone entered/completed this program?

I am considering it and the Illinois iMSM. My questions are:

1 - How math-heavy or calculation-heavy is this program? I can do some, but I am worried about a program that is almost entirely focused in that area. It would play to my weaknesses. But then again, maybe that would be beneficial - maybe weaknesses could become strengths.

2 - How long does it realistically take? Their web site says 2-3 years. But, it also says self-paced, so I am wondering if a motivated person can go through it much faster than that, say in one year. But I also realize that GT is a whole different thing than, say, UMPI (which says MAOL takes one year, but I would expect it to take me 8 to 16 weeks).

Also, if anybody has general remarks about the UIUC iMSM vs GT MSA that don't fit those questions, I'd be interested to hear those as well.

Thanks!

From the website, the iMSM program it states:

Generally, you will spend 10-15 hours per classes, per week. The course load is flexible – you can take one, two, or even zero class per semester depending on your capacity. (can you take more than 2 courses at a time?)

https://giesonline.illinois.edu/explore-...ement/faqs

You can do some stuff ahead of time in Coursea; however, that is only part of the courses.

It seems GT's program would require more technical experience and effort.

Also you have a bigger time commitment of 2 years to do this program.

This Reddit thread seems to give some insight to the program

Thanks! I was asking here more about the Georgia Tech program, though I'm also interested in iMSM info.

I have officially applied to the iMSM program and I'm pondering whether to apply to the GT program.

Most likely, I will not, because I just received an email from their admissions people saying that it is very math-centric. So, I am not confident of my chances of success, let alone speed, in that program. I haven't ruled it out yet, but leaning heavily against it now pending more info.

The email I received from GT:

The OMS Analytics program is designed for professionals within analytics and those wishing to make a career change. Our program is designed to enhance student’s ability to use statistics, quantitative analysis, and information modeling techniques to shape and make business decisions. The program balances theory and project-based work to enable students to develop a deep understanding of concepts in analytics and to apply this conceptual knowledge to real-world projects as part of their course work. Projects will differ from course to course, but in general there will be serious data analysis projects using large, real data sets in both core and elective courses. The program is designed to prepare students for optimal on-the-job performance while they expand their expertise and grow professionally over time.

Our program is 100% online. It is designed for working professionals and typically is completed within two years. We provide students with the flexibility to select the amount of courses they take per term. When considering how many courses to register for, I advise evaluating your personal and professional lifestyle. This is critical to ensure students do not overestimate their bandwidth to study course materials, retain information, and maintain an acceptable performance in their courses while conducting their daily lives. Be advised that each course is just as rigorous as its on-campus equivalent. Due to the rigor of our courses, we advise students working full-time enroll in no more than two courses per semester.

Our program is designed for working professionals and typically is completed within two years. The courses are typically taught asynchronously, which means learners access and study content anytime, anywhere. However, there may be synchronous virtual office hours with faculty and teaching assistants or for group project meetings, which students may need to attend in real time. These sessions are often recorded for later access. Exams, in general, are open for a period of time, during which students take the exam in a shorter time period. For example, you would have two hours within a 48-hour period to take the exam.  For more information on what to expect in our program, I advise reviewing the Curriculum and  Course Previews.

The tuition for our program is a flat rate, we do not charge additional fees for international or out of state students. The total cost will depend on how many semesters you take to complete the degree program, as the fees are assessed on a semester basis. There are no scholarships available. Tuition is $297 per credit hour course. Fees are $107 per academic term of enrollment. This amount is related to the technology fee. Fees are assessed only for those terms in which students are enrolled in courses. You will only pay for the semesters and credit hours in which you are enrolled for each term. Be advised, each term has a differing payment deadline. Most OMS Analytics courses are three credit hours with the exception of the 6-credit hour practicum course.  For more information, visit our Cost and Payment Schedule page.
