+1, I agree, for the last few years, I've been advocating on the balanced mix/match trifecta of certs, degree, experience. If you're starting off, get the cheapies or freebies from Coursera, EdX, etc. Work towards the degree and see if you can get some more experience along the way. If you're not starting off and have some experience, then work towards the degree. You're going to be swayed in all directions as advice will be provided by several members, you decide which you want to go with and see what ROI/Value you can get out of the mix, and last but not least, customize or personalize it to your own study style.
