My suspicion is that they may have been denied approval. They did just change their platform, and they didn't institute any kind of proctor process. Still, I don't know that the ACE process is very cost effective. I think early on, before they landed huge college accounts, it may have been their grind- but now that they have these huge accounts, I just don't know. As an example, EVERY community college in my state uses ALEKS math. That's zillions of students. How many of us here have done $20 and passed an initial assessment? They can't have been making much money on that segment of their business.

Honestly, I don't know why they would bother.  I've thought that for a long time.  They can't be making much money off of the very few people getting college credit, certainly not enough to justify the expense.

Just FYI. I got a responce to my email to McGraw-Hill / Aleks on them letting their accredidation lapse. Below is the whole email *spoiler* doesn't look good for us.

"Dear ,

Thank you for contacting ALEKS.

To cancel your account:

1. Log in to your master account
2. Click on Edit Billing Options
3. Select which student account you would like to cancel
4. Under More Options, click on Cancel student account at end of payment term

To request a credit back for charges that occurred on the account, please call ALEKS Customer Support at (714) 619-7090 to discuss our refund policy in detail.

Please feel free to contact ALEKS Support if you have additional questions. Thank you!

I remember the last time they were up for renewal, I think they were uncertain whether they wanted to go to the trouble and I called and told them that I was hoping they would renew because my oldest son was a senior in high school and working on College Algebra, which we were hoping would transfer.  It expired for a few months, but then renewed and he finished it up and my younger son, did the classes he needed for high school and college, so this really hasn't affected us this time.  I agree with Jennifer, I think the people who use it for college credit are just a drop in the bucket of their business.

So, if this doesn't get renewed, what are other options for college algebra and statistic courses?
I have someone interested in the whole online degree thing, and he wanted to start with Aleks...

You have a lot of options, just none as cheap as ALEKS was. Except Saylor, which is $25 for the exam (but some people find the learning cumbersome). Shmoop might be similar price if you do a lot of their courses in one month to bring down the per-credit price.

But off the top of my head:

CLEP
DSST
Saylor
Straighterline
Shmoop
Ed4Credit
Sophia

Sorry, just realized to you were asking for statistics as well, not just algebra. Some of those I listed have stats as well, but not all.

Optimistic StraighterLine will come through in the final hour but this seems to have a more of a dire tone. It is the worst timing for my son who blew us all away by completing Introduction to Statistics in 10 days. He had completed PreCalc in 15 days and was open to tackling another course. His first assessment was 24%, followed with 45%, 57%, 68% and 70%. The whole family celebrated him like crazy when he brought the laptop to share the update.

Unfortunately, when in the process of requesting the credits in ACE, I noticed the date issue. It's been my little ACE secret because I did not want to take away from his high and ALEKS still has a chance to come through in the final hour.

I think that Davar Academy is a good option for stats. It is $70, but a one-shot test that transfers pretty easily to TESU. It is NCCRS rather than ACE, so that is maybe an issue if there are plans outside of TESU. I found this exam to be very doable when I took it during the all-you-can-eat month. I also completed one of the ALEKS stats. classes and Davar was easier. If I remember correctly, the college algebra test at Davar was impossible.

I went and looked yesterday.

There was only like nine classes listed, and all of them had drop dead dates from last month.

I am so very sorry to see ALEKS go. Honestly, I don't see me passing those any other way. I toyed with the idea of stats, because it seems a lot of things require it, but I just... hated math so much I drug my feet.

I can't imagine taking it at a brick and mortar school. Ah well
