When someone is just starting out, it's much better to have a degree that many require, rather than a BSOL-type of degree; for someone with years of experience that just needs a check-the-box degree, then obviously anything will do, in which case you'd go for name-recognition.
I still think a CBE degree is not the best option for this kid, based on his own observations about himself, so don't forget to keep that in mind.
