Accounting certificate worth my time?
#1
I'm just wondering if it would be worth my time to pursue an accounting certificate? I'm not in the best of situations right now and I need some kind of skill to get me back to work. I'm currently living in the middle of nowhere so my options aren't the best. What I'd like to do is get myself in a better financial situation so I can move.

I'm not sure if accounting would be my best option though. I've considered other things such as cad, welding and a few other trades. I've noticed when I look at the local help wanted ads that one of the few positions they are usually looking for besides nurses is bookkeepers. All of our industry/manufacturing is gone so there isn't much other than service and healthcare type jobs.

Btw, I took an accounting class in college and absolutely hated it. It bored the hell out of me. But I'm willing to do whatever I have to to get out of this hellhole and move on to greener pastures.

I suppose if you want to be a bookkeeper it'll boost your chances. Maybe a trade like welding would be better.

If its just you and you have nothing holding you back, why not just pick up and move to a city with better options? Cities with more jobs means higher pay due to more competition for the same talent. Even entry level jobs are paid well. Make the leap!

Probably fear more than anything. I just don't want to make a move and then not be able to make things work. Also, the cost of living in a city is much higher than where I'm currently living.

I hate to tell you this, but bookkeeping is basically Accounting 101. If you hated it as a class, you'll probably hate it even more as a job. It probably doesn't pay really great either. Probably close to minimum wage.

What, really, is the point of going to school to get a certificate in a job you know you'll hate, so that you can move to somewhere with skills in a job that you hate that maybe pays a little more? That just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Get a skill in a job you might actually like, and then move for a better job doing that same thing you enjoy.

Or, go be a waiter somewhere. It will pay the same or more than bookkeeping. Or work at a store. Mow lawns. Walk dogs. All of the above. Pretty much anything other than bookkeeping.
