ALEK's Intermediate vs. College Algebra
#1
My husband needs to take a college level math course to satisfy the math requirement at TESC. He was thinking of taking either the ALEK's Intermediate Algebra or College Algebra from ALEKS.

** Does anyone know if there is a substantial difference between these courses? Is the College Algebra much harder than Intermediate?

** Does ALEKs show you how to work the problems?

** I know that you need to complete 70% of the work. Do you see a percentage on the screen as you go? Do you get a second chance if you answer a problem incorrectly the first time?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I guess it just depends how good you are at Algebra. My daughter did Intermediate Algebra and she said it was a workout. All the way through the first assessment she was thinking she wasn't going to pull off a 70%. Well she did and she was thrilled. She did the beginning assessment in 3 settings and it took her about an 1 1/2 hours. She is actually very good at math. She has had Calc in high school.

There is no second chances to answer a problem. You can ask for a new assessment at anytime during your course. You have a pie chart to see what you have mastered but it is the assessment that counts most. You need a 70% or above.

Thanks so much for your reply.

My husband has been away from "Algebra" type math for quite some time.

**Are the assessments timed?

**Are you shown examples of how to do the problems before you are given an assessement.

**Do you choose when to take the assessments?

No the assessments are not timed

You take the first assessment before you start the course. My daughter took the assessment and passed with over 70%. It took her 3 sittings and an 1 1/2 hrs total.

If you do not pass high enough on the first assessment you can start the course. At anytime during the course you can ask for another assessment and see were you are. the assessment are quite long.
