ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPIc): Advanced High/Superior
#1
American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, Inc.

I came across two examinations for foreign language. One is over the phone which is ACE reviewed and credits are awarded based on proficiency. The other is done via web which also issues ACE credit based on proficiency. The languages offered are:

Akan-Twi, Afrikaans, Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Bengali, Bulgarian, Cambodian (Khmer), Cantonese, Czech, Dari, Dutch, English, French, German, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Hmong, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lao, Malayalam, Mandarin, Modern Greek, Norwegian, Pashto, Persian (Farsi), Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, Yoruba.

What caught my eye was that you can test out under English and receive up to 14 credits in foreign language 8 being UD.

The ACE credits are:
ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPIc): Advanced High/Superior
ACE Course Number: 0046

In the lower-division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 6 semester hours in foreign language. In the upper-division baccalaureate degree category, 8 semester hours in foreign language (11/11).

and

ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI): Advanced High/Superior
ACE Course Number: 0041

Credit Recommendation: In the lower-division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 6 semester hours in foreign language. In the upper-division baccalaureate degree category, 8 semester hours in foreign language (11/11).

and

ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT): Advanced High/Superior

In the lower-division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 6 semester hours in foreign language. In the upper-division baccalaureate degree category, 8 semester hours in foreign language (11/11).

I suppose in theory if you speak more than one language you could rack up quite a few credits. Especially if you are Superior in one and Intermediate in another. You'd have several different ACE course numbers assigned to you.

I do not believe they will list the language on your ACE transcript. It's $115 for up to 14 credits and the exam is 40 min.

I suppose one could qualify for the BS in Foreign Languages at COSC using this for English especially if you want to teach English abroad. The written and oral can count for 28 credits 16 being UL.

Then there is the oral over the phone interview too which counts for 6 LL and 8 UL credit. I would assume since they are assigned to a different course code you could have a total of 42 with 24 being UL?

English doesn't count as a foreign language at American schools, and you can't use tests like this to complete an English degree. Also, I doubt they would let you double dip. The LL and UL credits for both tests are likely to be the same.

Even if they wont allow double dipping on the oral, the written plus oral is still 28 credits for English or whatever language you choose.

Does anyone know how this credits to TESC/CharterOak? A lot cheaper then NYU. Shame they don't list the language, though.

They will issue a certificate in PDF that can be verified with a code. I would assume they would transfer in as Foreign Language and then you'd supply the certificate to designate it towards the language.

I'd like to do both English and German next month. This is sort of exciting to me as this is not only a foreign language credential but also a teaching credential. For the written I will do English first. Hopefully it'll equate to 42 credits with 24 UL.

@Videogamesrock:

Hi! Have you taken the German OPI already and do you know if it overlaps with the German CLEP for TESU? I scored an 80 on the German CLEP (=9 credits) and want to take the OPI for another 6 credits if they don't overlap.

Also, how much did you pay? I contacted LTI and they wrote that the test is $139 and converting it to college credit would cost an 'ACE College Credit Fees' of $75. Has anyone ever heard of this before?

Thanks in advance!

I think the much more interesting play on this is on a language other than English. I'd like to hear more feedback from someone who has tried this already.

I have a feeling that the English version is going to be considered ESL, which is going to be worth zero at TESU. Just like algebra 1 is ACE approved for 3 credits, but actually worth nothing. I guess someone can try English to see if I'm wrong, but it won't be me.
