I'd write my request explaining any extenuating circumstances. For example, if you were sick, or had a death or illness in the family, or you were 18 and not really ready to start your education, etc... Be sure to express how committed you are to the process going forward. If you have any certifications or professional accomplishments that would reflect well on your ability to be a successful student, mention them. Assuming you've followed the formula here and have a large number of alt credits, mention them, too.
Worst that can happen is that they say no.
