They've been an issue for years. She knew it and was probably in someone's pocket. Aren't all politicians in someone's pocket? Schools with these weird accreditations are best to stay away from in general. There's a reason why schools you're heard of and state university systems are so popular.

"In 2016, the (DeVos) family was listed by Forbes as the 88th-richest in America, with an estimated net worth of $5.4 billion."

(3)"Aren't all politicians in someone's pocket?" Rhetorical question. My answer: No, not necessarily. Certainly not any that YOU voted for. 

If you want to get really pedantic about it, she wasn’t in the pocket of for-profit education. Rather, for-profit education IS HER POCKET. Sec DeVos and her family have (or at least had at the time of her confirmation) millions of their dollars invested in for-profit colleges and universities, including investments in schools/school holding companies with ACICS accreditation. This really isn’t a “fox guarding the hen house” situation. It’s more like the farmer putting the chickens in the fox’s den for safe keeping.
