To give some background at the moment I'm finishing up all the CLEP's I intend to take and hopefully by the end of the year / beginning of next year to be enrolled at probably TESU or Excelsior. Since these both accept a very large amount of self paced, cheaper, and probably easier alternate credits I would like to use them to bundle all those up into a diverse foundation of degrees to use as a springboard into an MS or more at more reputable schools. Thanks for any useful feedback.
- TESU has a policy of issuing a maximum 2 associates degrees & 2 BA degrees. Are most schools like this?
- I'm seeing some schools IT programs are ABET certified like Excelsior & WGU and others are not like TESU. Is ABET certification something that stands out or employers look for in non-engineering titled computer related programs?
- Similarly some Cyber security programs have the NSA & DHS CAE - CD / CO certification like Excelsior and others do not like TESU. Is this also something that tends to stand out to employers for this field or does it not really have that much impact?
- I see WGU mentioned quite a bit but what's it's advantage compared to the big 3? I can't anything on their site on what the maximum credit transferred in is allowed or what kind of alternate credits they accept like Saylor & Study.com
- If I'm initially just trying to get all my alternate credits bundled into a degree quickly would you recommend going for degrees - AA or BA - that have no capstones? Or will it not really help much? There's quite a few on TESU that have no cap like ASNSM Biology, Math, & Criminal Justice / BA IT & Data Science.
- WGU offers quite a few certifications with their computer programs, Excelsior less so, and TESU looks like little to none. Does this add much value to the program or would it be just as easy to do these on my own?
- If I were to enroll at TESU and just want to get my alternate credits bundled quickly would there be any reason not to get two AA 1st and then do two BA's there in different programs or would it be better just to do the BA first? I am currently not urgently needing any of these degrees for career / promotion purposes but I think getting something in hand sooner helps to keep the motivation for continuing up.
There have been many excellent answers already, but I will share some knowledge that I have gained through many mistakes. When planning your education you need to start from the end. What do you hope to gain? Begin with your job plans, then your graduate education, then your undergraduate education. This should help you focus on why you are doing what you are doing. For example, I was considering a Master's degree at Fort Hays State University after completing my BSBA at TESU. After completing my BSBA with less than 20 graded credits I found out that FHSU required a minimum of 60 graded credits to qualify for a Master's program and wanted two letters from undergraduate professors. This was the first major eye opener for me. If you want to get into a Master's program, it is important that you plan your undergraduate with graduate admissions in mind. Is there a maximum number of ungraded credits your Master's program will accept? Do they accept ungraded credits for major specific courses?
Good luck on your journey.
