So, if someone were to do a historical research- say, on the leadership style of some American President - they obviously must only compare and contrast already existing data, and offer a whole new perspective. However, if someone is taking up a topic like how dietary and exercise habits affect mental health, they might need to survey people, as this topic involves lifestyle choices etc. I am yet to formulate my topic, but I have been thinking along the lines of employee engagement, and it’s connection to mental health etc. Given this topic, I am wondering if I will be asked to actually interview people? There is substantial research on this topic, and if I am allowed to meta-analyze all that data, and offer a new interpretation, that might actually be good.
Again, it may depend on the mentor. Several people in my class have topics where they could interview people to get original data/research, but no one has been asked to. And the one person who suggested it for themselves was warned about it. The textbook itself also has a warning basically suggesting that it's actually really hard to do surveys/interviews and get it all done and analyzed in time.
