Hi Supermind! I’m sure some of this may vary a little by mentor. There is only one person in my class who is looking to do a creative project with some surveys, and the mentor was kind of warning her about how much extra work it was and seemed to be trying to steer her away from it. No one else in my class is doing original research. We’re all drawing on previous studies to answer particular questions. Mine is on a not-well-known historical subject. She hasn’t offered any pushback on my topic, and in fact has only had good things to say about it. So I wouldn’t stress too much on that front.
Yes, you are allowed to quote from other reliable sources. I’m only using two articles from journals because there isn’t much out there for my topic. Most of my sources, by necessity, are books. I only have two primary sources (which have been translated). Most of my sources are biographies.
