Review of Straighterline's Introduction to Communication
#37
embitca Wrote:The book is absolutely necessary to have because the tests are all based on the textbook and some of the stuff is pretty obscure.

What isn't necessary is doing any of the so-called onlinr Lessons. The audio doesn't match the text and the lessons for the most part have little to do with the textbook or outright contradicts it. I actually read the first few chapters of the textbook word for word and skimmed the rest. Skimming is doable as it helps you know where to look to find stuff, but the the class is really unbalanced, spending two sections on one chapter in early parts of the course and then cramming four heavy chapters into a single segment at the end. It was a bit ridiculous. I would recommend spending more time on part 3 of the textbook about Public Speaking. The first 2 parts of the book can be skimmed so you at least know where to look for stuff while doing the tests.

Thank you this is the single most valuable post I've read on SL. I was thinking I could just try to start without the book, and I noticed the lessons and audio were all jacked up, and I started losing faith in the system. I'll foot the bill for the book. Thanks Embi. <3
