Speech was definitely required when I got my AA from a california community college, but fitness was not.
I just looked up the current requirememnts of where I went and they still don't require fitness, and they also don't require speech any longer. I'm sure that's a big relief to many folks in community colleges, but I didn't mind speech too much.
