Bombed CLEP college mathematics today

Well this was a horrible day.

Went in for the college mathematics CLEP. Got a 36.

Isn't it true on CLEP tests they GIVE you 20 points minimum? So this means I practically got almost every question wrong?

I don't think any CLEP test give you any points. I think you have to earn every single one. Many times, you are helped by chance, but it's really hard to eliminate and use normal test-taking skills in math. So I am sure that you got some right, but were probably very,very unlucky on your guesses.

FACT: The lowest possible score is a 20. The hight possible is an 80.

FACT: Approx. 1/2 the questions on the test must be successfully answered to get a 50, or a pass.


THE HYPOTHESIS: In a 100 question test, such as Sociology and many others, there are only 60 possible points (between 20-80) for 100 questions.

60 points divided by 100 questions = .6pts

If each questions is worth .6 points, 50 correct questions = 50q X .6pts = 30pts

You must add 20 since 0 correct questions = 20pts.

30 points + 20 points = 50 points, or a pass.

Now:If each point in a 100 question test is worth .6 points, 100 questions X .6 points = 60; 60 + 20 = 80.

By this formula, answering 75 questions correctly would translate to a score of 65.

About CLEP scoring, I understand it differently, Shoto. First fact we know is that a 50 corresponds to a passing grade of C, which is not necessarily 50% correct answers on the exam, as is the case with regular college exams which usually require 70% correct for pass (or a C). This means that the average of people who took a course of the same subject as the exam and scored a C would be scoring a 50 on the CLEP.

Also, since it's a statistical score, it does not by any means scale linearly in relation to the number of correct answers. If I remember well, an additional 10, i.e. a score of 60, was one standard deviation from the mean. This kind of score can be more readily translated into a percentile ranking than into a prediction of the number of correct answers.

I'm sure your clarification on the scoring method is correct however I am simply passing on a general formula that seems to make sense to many, who like me, are not the best at figuring out standard deviations from the mean et al, etcetera, but just need a general idea on just how it works and how they may end up doing. I guess you could call the formula the KISS method: Keep It Statistically Simple.[/SIZE]

I'm sorry to hear your test didn't go well. I am also studying for the test to take soon and would appreciate any feedback since you just took it other than the tips that have already been posted. Any other words of wisdom that would help me pass? I had to hire a math tutor because I didn't understand it, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am so sorry to hear that. I have been inspired but the feedback you have given me in the past. I still have not gotten the nerve to take my test yet. Hold your Head up and smile, you accomplished so many more and you will accomplish this one too. Never give up! Stay encourage!

So sorry to hear that! I have not taken very many CLEP's but I bet it's hard to not pass one.

How much did you study? Did you try Peterson's test as practice?
