Hi,

has anybody taken the GRE Chemistry subject exam? I am contemplating taking it. I hear it's very difficult. Any experience?

Thanks!

Well, that's good news! LOL!!

I bought the Princeton Review book today. I think it's written in some weird language I don't speak. Well, I just need to score above 80th percentile!!!

Best of luck to you, I don't have any experience with it myself but I have a friend who recently took it to get into grad school for chemistry. He had just graduated with two bachelor's degrees, one in chemistry and the other in physics, with a high GPA from a highly-regarded B&M school. He ended up having to take the test twice because he didn't score high enough the first time. I'm not sure what score he had to hit but I'm guessing that it's not an easy test regardless haha. Smile

Hi Jody28!

I am studying for the general chemistry CLEP now. I have found that I do like the subject, but I really admire you for wanting to take the GRE.

I wanted to add that REA offers books with practice exams for each GRE Subject test. I always like having lots of practice tests to use. Here is the page:

REA Online - Making The World Smarter

Alissa (alissaroot) has posted several website links in the specific feedback forum.

I think there is nothing to lose in spending $150 and having the potential to earn so many credits in a subject you like.

Best wishes on your studies and exam!

Hi everybody,

well, I did what every normal person getting ready to be tested on 6 semesters worth of chemistry would do and went on vacation. So, now I'm back and I have 6 weeks to get ready for the exam.

Thanks for all the links everybody has posted. This forum is an invaluable resource!

I looked at all the books offered for the GRE Chemistry at Amazon and most of them are getting terrible reviews. I will buy some actual college textbooks and try to work my way through those. I will also try to find more practice exams. One is on the gre website, available for download, and I remember reading somewhere that there are 5 old exams that are available for purchase. So I will do all my purchasing this weekend.

I would rather try and get a low score (can't fail in something you volunteer for!) than not try at all.

I'll post updates when I have more information.

You are a determined person and that can have a positive effect on the outcome. Smile

I am going for my degree in Natural Sciences and I have 18 B & M Chemistry credits. I'm not sure I would want to tackle a GRE on it.Wink

Do you have any Chemistry background?

I just took and passed the Chemistry CLEP exam. I hope to have some feedback finished soon. Maybe something there will be helpful to you, too.

(feedback added - http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-tho...#post66172)

I was scared off by a moderate review that said there were mistakes in the Chemistry CLEP REA. After about a month of studying, I realized that I needed to try the REA anyway at least as a guide for what is important to learn.

I also looked at the official GRE practice exam, and I was surprised that I could answer some of the questions. I guess I should have already learned about 20% of the material, but I had not realized that. I also noticed that the GRE only gives about half the time per question that the CLEP does. That will be challenging, since I did not think I had enough time on the CLEP exam.

Thanks for keeping us updated on your progress.
