ECE - English Comp
#1
Just got my results back, and I got a C. Actually I haven't heard of anyone NOT getting a C on this test, so I'm beginning to wonder if it's possible to get an A. Sad I can't think of anything in particular I would have screwed up on, other than length possibly. I'm a concise writer; they might not have appreciated that. So now my GPA has dropped from 3.8 to 3.17. Thanks, grading people.

Am sorry to hear about yr experience, but am also getting scared it being my very next test...and a non native English speaker...for me even the possibility of having to respond to a subject that am not familiar with is a concern !!

What alternatives are available?

The ECE essay exams can be tough from the feedback I've seen. The good news is that you just earned 6 credits- not bad for one test! And your GPA is still pretty darn good! IF you want another shot at it, you might check with EC about re-taking the exam. I think you can, I'm just not sure how it works.

Just out of curiosity, how did you prepare for the exam? Did you use SmartThinking (I believe it's free when you register for an ECE)?

I know you're disappointed, but you passed a difficult exam- CONGRATS!

Thanks. I have no intention of re-taking that horrible thing, though. I just got my 'paper results' in the mail, which gives me a basic evaluation of my essays according to their rubric. I really wish they would have included something to tell me which question was which, but I think it was the poetry essay I got the low score on. The other two were in the 'okay' region.

If memory serves, most of my preparation dealt with learning the formats I would be expected to use (APA citations) and what to expect from the prompts. I'm already a good writer, but my writing style lends itself more to informal, less rigid works with wide allowance for dry humor, sarcasm and opinionated rhetoric. Sadly, I don't think they appreciate that at Excelsior, at least not on this test.

I've mentioned in other threads that MyAccess is a joke, and really is little more than a glorified spell check. If you feel that you need practice in your spelling, grammar, or just getting back into a writing groove, have at it; the prompts it gives you are supposed to be similar to the ones on the real test, but don't expect much.

Experience with poetry and literary devices is highly recommended, and likely would have improved my score if I had spent more time on that. Good luck with your test.

If you're an Excelsior student, your options are the ECE test or the full English Comp course. TESC and Charter Oak allow the CLEP English Comp.

Do you have any other options for getting the grade that you want? For instance, could you take a community college online course? I took an in class 5 week summer course at a community college.
AS in 2010 and BS in 2013 at Excelsior College - Transcripts and Costs
MS Biostatistics in 2019 at Texas A&M University - Graduate School
