Analyzing & Interpreting Lit

I wanted to get some of your opinions. I have been studying for US History I and have scheduled the test for Friday (5 days away). In reading through some posts, it seems to be that many of you feel that the CLEP A&I Lit. exam is fairly easy to pass with minimal amounts of preparation.

My questions is this - Do you feel that if I study a couple of hours a day for the next 4 days I SHOULD be able to pass the A&I Lit. exam? I am trying to knock out a bunch of elective credits, and 6 credits would be a big boost. I feel like I could prepare for it in the given time, as I just took ENG112 in my traditional college classroom, and we did a great deal of A&I Lit. I have also confirmed that it does not conflict with ENG112. I would love to walk out of there with 9 total credits!!!

What are your opinions? Also, I have a few study materials, but any recommendations are welcomed.

[SIZE="3"][COLOR="Navy"]The A&I exam is not particularly difficult per se, however the exam can get away from you in terms of time constraints. It seems that the allotted 90 minutes just seems to fly faster than most of exams because of having to read, and re-read most passages looking for the correct feeling, inflection, thought, or meanings sought.

I made sure that I could meet and beat the clock (and pass too) via practice exams. Once confident - I sat the exam and passed with several minutes to spare.

It's really a question as to how quickly and accurately you can A&I the passages; perhaps try a sample or two first - GOOD LUCK!![/COLOR][/SIZE]

That's good advice. I might be streching myself a bit too thin. I think I will try a couple of practice exams this week, and see how I do. I am leaning towards taking it later rather than rushing to try and get ready for it this week.

You could take a couple of practice exams this week AND take the exam, if you do alright on the mocks.

If you have already practised the A&I lit aspect in your other class, and if you know the basic literary terminology (sonnet, stanza, blank verse, simile...etc.), you will likely do well on this exam.

People do fail this exam on occasion. It's a 6-credit literature exam after all. But if you have a good grasp for A&Iing literature passages, and know the literary terms, I can't see you having too much trouble with it.

Try a mock exam or two, to gauge where you stand, and then go in and take the exam as soon as you feel ready.

Though a few people on this forum have passed even though they where unable to complete all the questions on the test.

The thing that made it hard for me to read fast, was the SIZE of the font. It was HUGE. I don't know if this is the same for everyone, or if it was just the way my test center had their computer set up. But I had to lean back to read the words, otherwise it freaked my eyes out. Also, because the font was so big, I found myself constantly having to scroll up and down to read the entire passage.

Was this a problem for anyone else?

I have always thought I was a decent reader, but this test showed me I needed to do a few things when I came to reading:

1) Read faster
2) Learn to read

But honestly, I took the paper version of this test, so font wasn’t an issue. Re-reading was. I would read a passage, answer the question, move onto the next question, re-read part of the passage, answer the question, and so on….this was an endless cycle for me. In the end, I ran out of time 4/5 of the way through the test and received a 49 for my score. That sucked, because now I have to take Social Science & History.

All in all, this test wasn’t hard. Time management seemed to be the key. I know I could have moved a bit faster, but in the back of my mind I thought I had plenty of time. I was wrong. Then again, I took this test without any prior practice tests and not reading any of the feedback on the test from this forum. Had I done that, I believe I would have had no problem with the test.

Aaaw Man! A 49 is SO close.

If you only completed 4/5 of the exam and still managed a 49, it is almost certain that TIME was your only problem.

You could always take it again after 6 months, if you still needed the credits. Based on your painfully close-to-passing score the first time, you would be pretty much assured of a pass the second time round.

[SIZE="2"][COLOR="Navy"]Absolutely - not only was the FONT LARGE , but the passages seemed to be in compressed columns.

One other thing that I faced on this one was that there was NO CLOCK display to judge my time with. I didn't realize this until after 10-15 minutes into the test so I had to stop, estimate and guess how my time I had with my watch and then wrote down the time.

Fortunately I passed with from what I guessed was several minutes left.

This was the only time that I didn't have a clock - anyone else?[/COLOR][/SIZE]
