Edgewood College/UpGrad DBA; potentially $11,250
Hey all.

Course eight is now done, and grades are in. It was on Financial Decision Making. There were two written assignments, two video presentations, and a test. The assignments were about what I'm accustomed to by now, and the grades came in as expected. The test was a surprise; to this point, it's just been short quizzes. I was even told by both UpGrad and the Dean before starting the program that there were no exams. This instructor said he's old school and will always want a test in this course. It was pretty challenging, with lots of long hand manual calculations. I didn't do extraordinary (though I'm sure some of you will!), but I passed, and I'm glad it's behind me. Other than the final test, this course has no big surprises.

Happy New Year, and see you all again in roughly six weeks.

Hi lidel,

thanks for sharing your experiences with the DBA program! Greatly appreciated.

I am thinking about applying for the program too, but my time is rather limited due to full time work and child. Do you have a rough idea how many hours per week are necessary to dedicate to the program? Are you always taking two courses at the same time? How long are assignments (min. words, etc.) and presentations? Do you have to work through most of the provided coursework to get them done?

Thanks for your response.

Hi Caracal,

I'm glad to hear this information has been helpful. While everyone is different, I feel like most people could keep up with things with about 6-10 hours a week of dedicated time. I am in the UpGrad program and we only do one course at a time. If you opt to take the course directly from Edgewood I believe you could take as many courses as you like.

The assignments vary in length, but generally, it is about what I was encountering for my master's level courses. This course I'm in now the final is 10-14 pages with a six minute video and a 10 page secondary assignment. The five-module quizzes took me about an hour in total. The last course was a 5-minute video, a 15-minute video, a 3-page assignment, and one about 20 pages plus the exam.

Most courses are structured so that the assignments progress towards the final submissions. I usually spend the first week just digesting the lectures and readings. By the end of that, I have a big picture of things and can start focusing on assignments, usually doing them sequentially if they build on one another. Week two is usually a live office hours call, and the instructors have begun being open to direct emails. There are also opportunities for TA calls in the last couple of weeks if you want them.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi lidel,

thanks for your quick reply.

10 hours per week and one course at a time seems still doable in my current situation. 80-300 pages for the thesis in just one year seems ambitious though compared to other programs, but I guess they do not expect students to reinvent the wheel? As an international student, I will also apply via UpGrad since the scholarship would significantly reduce the fee. I hope they will offer it to me.

@all: Has anyone checked by any chance if this DBA will be accepted by German authorities as equal to a PhD?

Thanks and best wishes

I wouldn't worry too much about the dissertation stage. The way the program is structured, you will be indirectly working on it from day one, and at least in my case, it has progressed very naturally. I'm a year into the program and about four months from the start of the applied doctoral research portion, and I already have an 80-page proposal draft. By the time May rolls around and the final coursework is done, I hope to be hitting the ground running for the next phase.

Thanks, got it. The program seems to be well structured then. So I have applied and will be joining the cohort end of March.

Fresh off the presses! Edgewood College will be renamed to Edgewood University effective July 2025.

From College President Mansion:

"We have made it official: Edgewood College will be renamed Edgewood University in July of 2025.

In 2027 we will celebrate 100 years of advancing our mission since our founding by the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. As we position the institution to flourish in our second century, the time is right to celebrate by making this change to honor our past, and to embrace the future. The Board of Trustees of Edgewood College and the leadership council of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa have approved the new name, which will take effect July 1, 2025.

Edgewood College has been effectively operating as a university since 1986, when our first advanced degrees were added to the academic portfolio. In 2001, our first doctoral degree was added, and the number of those programs has grown, and continues to grow. While our adult and graduate program partnerships are expanding the reach of our mission, our commitment to our traditional, undergraduate students remains steadfast. As you know well, the students who make their home here on Monroe Street for four years are living stewards of the mission that we inherit and embrace."

I certainly think this change makes sense as Edgewood has long since offered education above the undergrad level.

Hi Everyone -

Special thanks to Lidel for your wonderful notes / progress.

I’m Canadian. Have completed my MBA / BBA and always had a goal of doing a DBA.

Some of the notes on long papers, stats, and the dissertation have me nervous as I have zero desire to research ongoing and am a better speaker than writer but challenge is good.

Did anyone else have these concerns?

Also, I still don’t fully get the Splitit. They charge full amount as a hold, take seat fee, then following month release hold and only take 1 installment per month?

Appreciate finding this group.

Hi Adam. I'm glad my notes have been helpful!

From my perspective, the papers aren't overly long, but you can expect several per course. The stats and dissertation intimidated me going in, but the way it's structured, everything is coming together well. Regarding Splitit, they put a hold on your card for the whole amount you are financing. It is not charged to the card, but that amount goes against your available credit limit. The hold remains during the term of the payments, though it is decreased by your payment amount every month. It costs you nothing, though depending on your credit card limit, it may tank that card for a while. I hope that made sense. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

Have a great day.
