We can stay kind and helpful while still discussing politics.
Canada has never had a federal department of education. Yet the federal government supports PK-12 education largely by sending money to programs administered by the provinces, and higher education by that and by more direct programs, administered by different federal departments, such as the departments for employment and science. These include an extensive federal student loan program. Colleges and universities are regulated by each province, and there is not a strong federal hand coordinating this regulation. It works for Canada. (More detail on the sister board.)

Unless something changes, politics is allowed, as far as I know.
I recall hearing that it might be possible to reduce the workforce at certain federal agencies, such as the FBI, without requiring Congressional approval, though I’m unfamiliar with how this process would work. The U.S. President does not possess the same level of authority as the President of Argentina, who can unilaterally eliminate significant parts of the government.
This Newsweek article honestly points out that eliminating the Department of Education requires 60 votes in the Senate, which Republicans currently do not have. While Republicans do have one reconciliation bill that could cut government programs with only 50% Senate vote, many establishment Republicans are opposed to reducing spending. I believe a compromise to balance the budget would involve cutting spending by half and increasing taxes by half. Although I would prefer zero tax increases, implementing any spending cuts would be a welcome change from how Washington has operated over the past two decades.

This meme applies to both parties, but it's especially funny when it comes to Republicans in Congress.

If anything, this country needs more education not less. I was at a STEAM event today with 3rd-8th graders. I was surprised at how many how kids have speech issues and their general lack of knowledge at basics.

they say the speech issues are due to school closing during covid and children wearing masks
and general education issues are due to poor parenting, teachers unions and bad theories about learning to read

Here is an article about DOGE headed by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy

I heard many federal workers are teleworking, and if they’re forced to return to the office, around 25% are expected to quit, which could save the government money. However, I bet the government machine will find a way to hire replacements or spend the savings elsewhere.
The Federal Register contains over 90,000 pages of rules and regulations—an amount no human, regardless of IQ, could fully comprehend. However, a large language model (LLM) can process what no human can, presenting a unique opportunity for AI to step in and help.
Any plan is better than no plan, and right now, there’s no plan to balance the budget.

Dismantling the Department of Education could significantly impact federal oversight of education, shifting responsibilities to state and local governments, but it raises concerns about consistency in educational standards nationwide.

The only thing the DOE is good for is for providing this database.
Both my parents graduated college without any problems before it existed. My mother using the GI bill and my father only had to work a summer job to pay for his tuition.

I'm almost 50 years old and not a single person I know could have afforded college, room & board, books, living expenses, etc with just a summer job. That was long before our time. A summer job might pay for your books for the year now. Might.
