MA American History for $7,500
#1
Hello everyone,

I don't post often, but I did discover - for those interested - a Master of Arts in American History from Gettysburg College for $7,500. Its $750 per 3-credit course with a total of 10 courses:

https://www.gilderlehrman.org/masters-degree-american-history

Not a bad price at all. However, there is a bit of a barrier in place:

Eligibility: "We are currently accepting teachers, district supervisors, librarians, museum professionals, and National Park Service employees. Community college instructors are eligible to apply as well." Additionally, you need a bachelors to enroll in this program as well.

Though, you could get around this possibly if you do substitute teaching (maybe). It is recommended that you email maprogram@gilderlehrman.org for that info.

Further information suggests a "MA+15/30". My interpretation reads this as if you possess a master's degree, 15 of the 30 credits can be transferred. So the degree COULD be $3,750.

I do not think that's what MA+15/30 refers to here. I think it refers to teachers qualifying for higher pay grades if they have a master's plus 15 graduate credits or a master's plus 30 graduate credits.

I stand corrected - you are right. I found additional information about the naming from a different link further within the college:

"Our new MA+15/30 allows K-12 educators who possess a master’s degree—in any subject—to take courses as non-degree-seeking students, so they can both advance in their salary schedules and study American history with our award-winning historians.

The offering’s name, “MA+15/30,” refers to the number of credits earned beyond a master’s degree. For example, a person with a master’s degree and five three-credit courses would qualify for an MA+15. Most teacher salary schedules award raises for such progressive attainment of education."

I spoke to them and they did say they do allow some transfer credits into the program, too.

Because apparently, I can't say no to an under $10k master degree, I've applied. (Thankfully I meet the qualifications)

I see youre currently in a couple of other master programs. Are you sill active in them alongside this one?

I agree! I think this might be the cheapest Master in History found so far.

I have three classes at GSU, two at Elmwood, and one at Uopeople.
I'd start any new degree with the Summer or Fall term so that I would be free of GSU and Elmwood by then (I'll finish both around April 2025)

Do you meet the qualifications for the program? I don't meet anything but I am absolutely passionate about American History and would love to do this program. I am currently halfway through the UCA program. I have sent them an email about it.

Good luck. I've got a provisional "I qualify" statement from them due to my background and current teaching status. We'll see after I actually apply and get word back, however.
I'm also still waiting to hear back (and apparently will be until February) about the UCA program.
