Age waiver question - 18 year old
#1
Hello:

Has anyone recently completed the age-waiver process at TESU recently? My son is 18 and completed the age waiver form for TESU this week. He was wondering whether he needs to wait for a response before submitting the TESU application or whether he can proceed with submitting his application while waiting to hear back.

He submitted his high school transcript, community college transcripts (2 RA credits), Credly transcript and a copy of his XAMK transcript (45 ECTS, but not evaluated by ACEI yet) to the TESU transcript mailbox.

@jg_nuy, Without an application, they will not look at your sons transcripts at all and may discard them as they won't know 'who those transcripts are for', as he's not in the system yet. You should apply ASAP, make sure to send in the transcripts for your high school, community college, Credly (for the CSM course and other ACE credits), and in regards to the XAMK credits, they won't accept it until it has the ACEI recommendations for credit after an evaluation from them have been done.

Many thanks. He filed the application. Now to wait to hear back. It was a bit different than when I filed mine, as there is no longer an option to create an applicant account before filling out the app.
He said he wants to finish more courses at XAMK before getting the ACEI evaluation done. Hopefully no issues there. He’s also looking at the Metropolia CS courses, may have some additional free option as he’s a EU citizen.

They are European Union citizens via my wife, which may offer tuition-free access to more courses, but still trying to understand the process. Thanks for the Metropolia package suggestion, I’d seen it, but will take a deeper look.
My youngest starts dual enrollment in 2 weeks at Pierpont. He did a month of Sophia, the CSM course and the TEEX cybersecurity courses. Pierpont accepted nearly all, which is great.

Update: My son was accepted into TESU. Waiting to hear back on the age waiver request to skip TES-1010 and avoid the 9-credit cap. They requested unofficial transcripts for that review. Still waiting on the academic evaluation, but so far, so good.

Age waiver approved based on credits on XAMK-Finland unofficial transcript. Holding off on the foreign credit evaluation as my son is wrapping up some courses.

Great update, what's the TES-1010 you're referring to? I didn't know they instituted that requirement for prospective students needing the waiver. Hmm, if I had to hazard a guess, that seems like the TES-100 Cornerstone re-badged into a new Intro to College or College Readiness course of some sort... Yes, it's a good idea to do things in orderly fashion, I agree with waiting for all your Finnish credits to be completed before the Foreign Credit Evaluation.

It's a 2 hour orientation. Everyone has it listed as optional in My Courses. They waive the requirement for it if one has 6 RA credits, 6 credits from AP tests or 12 credits from LPR review. ACE credit does not clear it. The XAMK credits + a couple of credits from Clackamas and ASU were sufficient.

This was in the original acceptance and some of the previous verbiage shared for 16-19 year old applicants:
  • Your admission requires you to take a two-hour online TES-1010 orientation course about self-directed learning. Once you have completed the two-hour course, you will be able to register for college courses. Information on the University's age policy can be found on our Undergraduate Admissions Webpage. Completing the TES-1010 course will demonstrate your readiness for the self-directed learning that will be needed to make this educational journey a success.
  • If you do not wish to take the orientation course, and are able to demonstrate self-direction, as explained on the Undergraduate Admissions Webpage, please complete the Age Waiver Petition Request Form.
