Has anyone used a TESU degree to obtain CA teaching certificate?
#11
If you haven't already done so, I'd also read through at least step two of this guide to teacher preparation programs; it's maintained by the California Department of Education, and the second step describes factors specific to prospective California teachers.

https://www.teachcalifornia.org/Steps/Prep2
Ongoing: MLIS

June 2022, Thomas Edison State University (TESU): Second degree - BA in Computer Science + ASNSM in Mathematics + Cert. in CIS + Cert. in Operations Mgmt.
e-Packs: Computer Concepts; Industrial Psych.
Guided Study: Comp. Architecture
Online: Intro. to PLA; Database Mgmt.; Software Eng.; Data Structures; Liberal Arts Capstone; DSI-610 (Statistics.com)

May 2019, a residential, RA institution: BA in Political Science and Educational Studies
Relevant equivalencies: MAT-321; MAT-431; STA-315

No idea why they are still linking solely to the old catalog. The requirements are largely the same. The biggest issue is getting the required UL credit. Most foreign language credits seem to be LL. You need 18 total UL credits, 3 of which are the capstone. That leaves 5 UL credits. I don't believe that the intermediate language courses are UL, but the advanced ones should be.

OSU does seem to have sufficient UL classes for Spanish: https://ecampus.oregonstate.edu/soc/ecat...bject=SPAN That would be almost $5k just for the 5 classes, though. It is worth it if THIS is the degree she really wants, but that's still more costly than the average TESU degree.
I was looking at OSU the other day, but with the cost was wondering if it was worth it or better to just take them through the TESU (or wherever she ends up going)? Aside from a Liberal Studies degree, are there some other alt friendly degrees we should be looking at?

Wrap up her AA, then instead of transferring to a state school knock out whatever can be done through Study or something that way (or even knock those out while finishing the AA) before transferring to TESU (they have a foreign language degree). Then find a teaching certificate program to go through. Any suggestions on a cert program? Or know if anyone here has gone this route?

If this person wants to teach, then they to find a program that meets the state's licensing requirements.

The idea of an AA or foreign language degree seems like a waste of time and money.  If you want to prove you can speak Spanish, you don't need a degree, just take the DELE exam.
I’ll take a look at the, thank you. As for the Spanish AA, literally all but Spanish 4NS doubled (or are doubling) as gen ed classes for her. Tested out of Spanish 1 and 2. Chose to only skip 1, since she he had to replace it with something and replaced it with Sociology which fits in the lifelong learning category. First 2 Spanish classes (for her Spanish 2, and 3NS) fills humanities requirement. History of Mexican American People class fits in social science requirement. All that was left was Spanish 4 and bingo; Spanish degree with all transfer requirements completed. The art degree, she is touch different reason. She’s picking that up by focusing her Art requirement and her free electives into one area. We’ve been spreading those classes out over the semesters to lighten her load and keep her from burning out. So, yeah. I can argue “what’s the use in the degree” but it does maximize the gen eds for the major.

Does this mean that TESU doesn’t have classes that fit their requirement?

THANK YOU! Does the -trnsfr req on their website mean that they don’t have classes? Or when you are logged in, are there options to fill those requirements?

Ya, I believe they don't have classes when it says transfer req.

Their undergrad classes are here:

Well, shoot. I was under the impression that if a person wanted to they could go start to finish through TESU for any of their degrees, even if it’s a smarter move to transfer in as many classes as possible. If they don’t have all of the classes for this degree, and acceptable classes are hard to find, that puts a different spin on things.

To become a teacher in CA, you do not need to have a bachelor's in a certain subject; you can get a degree in anything you want, and then pass the CSET exam for the subject you want to teach.

If your GF is fluent in Spanish, I'm going to get as many UL credits as possible using the ACTFL Exams for Spanish (OPIc, WPT) for a total of 12UL and 12LL which can be used in the AoS. That will be the fastest/easiest option.

Then she just needs English Comp 2, Ethics, a Social Science, and 1 add'l UL course in the Social Science or Humanities area and she's done.

Then $6500 for 6cr at TESU and she's done. She could probably complete the degree within 6 months of finishing her AA.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm probably also going to apply to EC and see what they do with those ACTFL credits in addition to the CC credits. That school is cheaper, but they require more UL credits, so it's a matter of what's easier for your GF to do (pay or take courses). But it's worth looking at.

If EC brings in those UL credits, then you'd need the following:
English Comp 2
Ethics (take an UL one)
1 additional UL course from Arts/Sciences
2 additional UL courses from anywhere

Then $4000 for 7cr at EC (Info Lit/Cornerstone/Capstone) and she's done. Same as TESU, she could probably complete the degree within 6 months of finishing her AA, although EC graduates monthly with no application to graduate hassle.
