Changing School Name to University

Supermind Wrote:In my experience, ‘college’ vs ‘university’ does make a difference in Japan. May be that is also the case with some other countries. In late 2019, I took up a consulting engagement in Japan. I had just graduated from TESU. The Japanese lawyer who was liaising with me to process my visa asked very specifically if my transcript/diploma expressly stated the term ‘University.’ Apparently, if it stated ‘College’ or ‘Academy’, they like to do some additional background checks, and the visa process tends to be longer.

How long was the consulting gig? Yes, some countries distinguish "college" vs "university" even though they may mean the same thing - a 4 year degree granting institution. It's a classification system they go through, example, college would be anything a Bachelors and lower and University would be a Bachelors and higher, there is much overlap at the Bachelors level, but they would treat college as less than university in ranking and recognition...

And before that, they were called Regents College for quite a long time.

Yep, when I enrolled they went by "Regents College of the University of the State of New York", and were known as the oldest State university in the country, founded in 1784.

Huh? Excelsior was found in 1971 by the NYS Board of Regents. It was Regents College from 1984 until 2000. It's never been a SUNY school. NY became a state in 1788.
