I really like the sound if umpi but I'm worried that it's not actually the most affordable option. I was before considering TESU but that also seems to be getting progressively more expensive. Would UMPI be doable at a cheap rate/short time frame if all I have is sophoa credits? I also wonder if you have to pay the full 1,400 amount each time or if you can space out payments? Thank you all for your info and help, greatly appreciated.

Ashkir made a thread about transferring Sophia credits to UMPI. Many Sophia courses only transfer as general electives and don't fill the GEC (gen eds) or the major. Which degree are you looking at for UMPI? 

You are charged $1,400 each term. If you are registered for courses during term 1 and term 2 in a semester then you will be charged for the entire semester before the semester begins. Yes, you must pay the entire bill by the time classes start. They do have a payment plan. Ashkir has discussed that on here as well. They also accept financial aid.

I only transferred in Sophia. I'm going to try and finish it in 1 semester (2 terms) but I might need 3-4 terms.

TESU transferring in 114, is around the 6.5k mark. Plus you have to spend hundreds to thousands on getting the extra credits beyond Sophia.

If you're doing liberal studies, you can pass a lot sooner.

19 classes / 57 credits. So doing all of Sophia basically netted me 63 of my 120 credits. 52% of the total degree! Not shabby right? The other stuff transferred in as electives. 

If you did liberal studies you would easily transfer in 80 of your 120 at UMPI! 

So again if you do 1 class a week, you will need 15 weeks to finish it off after Sophia. Each Term/Session is 8 weeks long. So you can finish it in two terms/sessions (One semester)

Considering the 19 classes left to take I listed above, anyone that is considering going to UMPI straight after doing everything at Sophia will only need to take 15 classes roughly. So... Again considering those (days rounded);

1 Term Completion = 19 Classes / One class every 3 Days / $1400
2 Term Completion = 19 Classes / 9.5 Classes Per Term / One class every 6 days / $2800

So it's super possible to do this in 4 terms or less after Sophia. I am about to start my first term that starts tomorrow, yay! I'm going to try for 1 class a week but if I can go faster I will! \o/ If I'm able to do this it means my total cost of a degree was $2800. If I don't do this, I don't think I'm in a bad shape until I start hitting more than 4 terms.

Again, if you're liberal studies major with a minor. You can graduate so much sooner, with less required classes and more electives You can easily do it in 1 semester without being stressed as Sophia would easily cover 75% of your degree over 66%. Liberal Studies (with any minor) can walk through it rather quickly with minimal upper levels needed.

Even without financial aid I think after Sophia.org UMPI is a great choice.

I have submitted my first paper to UMPI. Something nice they do is allow you to submit the paper as a draft and get feedback on it. Then you make your revisions and submit the final paper. Your entire grade for the course is based on this paper. If you fail the paper, you fail the course. If you get a 95, then you get an A in the course. So it's nice they give you feedback and let you know if you're on the right path and what you need to improve upon. I'll report back after my draft comes back. I'm working on my second class and 2 Sophia classes at the same time. Can't wait to finish English Comp II and Stats at Sophia so I can just focus on UMPI.

Will you please let me know how long the papers are expected to be?

The paper length varies by class. Every class has a very different final assessment. So far the lengths for my classes are 11-16 pages and 15-20 pages. I have another class with a project as the final assessment. The project consists of a 2 page executive summary, an ERD model, an Access database, a series of SQL queries, and reports. This is the only paper you write for the entire class. Your final grade is the grade you receive on the final assessment. There aren't many classes which have a final exam. You must receive an 80 or higher on the final assessment to pass the class. If you fail an exam, you can take it over, but I think you need to talk to your advisor or coach first. I'm not sure what happens if you fail the paper/project since you get to submit it as a rough draft first.

What courses are you taking right now at UMPI? I start October 26th BLS in Educational Studies. Trying to figure out what UL courses to take.

How is the BLS in educational studies?  Is it geared toward elementary, middle school or high school teaching?  IT appears to have 4 upper level classes already.  DO you need a certain amount of upper levels in the electives also?  What are the total requirements?  

 How quickly are you able to get courses done?  Did you transfer Sophia courses?  If so how many came in?

I understand there's no teacher certification or hands on experience .   Would these classes be needed as prerequisites for a Masters in teaching or education?  I am still pondering bachelor degrees options and the more information the better!

I doubt it you can do one class every 3 days. Its not Sophia. Its University. No matter how course is structured its very small change u can do 1 class= 3 days, maybe for some courses if u have familiarity with them. But i wouldnt count on it

This is an awesome post, I totally agree with this as it is possible to be cheaper than the Big 3 (Including COSC) if you can set yourself up and pace yourself in finishing the degree within say two or three terms. Essentially shoot for two terms finish but settle for three or four.

This is very doable for the BALS with ANY minor (whatever floats your boat from their offerings), hopefully they'll add more! UMPI is great... I would consider them over Brandman/WGU if they offer a program that is not available from either of these...

I can't remember if it's been noted in THIS thread or elsewhere but I'd just like to remind anyone who's considering getting two degrees from UMPI that you shouldn't go after a lib studies degree first. ss20s has noted that UMPI considers lib studies to be a "terminal degree", meaning that your studies are done and you cannot get another degree. So if you are considering (say) English/communications + educational studies, I think you'd want to go after the English degree first and then switch to the educational studies one.

They're actually super upfront about that. If you tell them you want to do English and Educational Studies Minor, they'll mark your plan to include both and you're not done until you finished the requirements for both.

I'm in the BLS but I have not done the educational studies minor. Yes, all UMPI degrees require UL courses. I can't tell you have many are required, because each degree is different. That's a question for admissions. 

I only transferred in a few Sophia courses. Course length varies drastically. Each course is different. Some have a lot of content and some don't. Just like Sophia's courses. Some have very long and time consuming Final Assessments and some don't. It also depends on your level of interest in the topic. 

Teaching is a state by state thing. Every state has different requirements. You will need to research what your state requires.

I have completed the course content in a few classes in 3 days, but that doesn't finish the course. There's the Final Assessment which is usually a paper or project. I can't see how anyone could finish an entire course in just 3 days unless they didn't sleep and worked on the class all day and night. Some of these courses I was familiar with the topic and other courses I wasn't. We also have to keep in mind our grades! Our ENTIRE grade is based on the Final Assessment. Anything below an 80 is a failure. So you can't just write a crappy paper and expect to pass.

That's great! I'm glad that they're easier to deal with than TESU. With TESU, it sometimes feels like you have to "trick" them into letting you get a degree.
