TESU BSBA in Accounting Jobs?
#1
Good afternoon everyone,
With TESU’s BSBA in Accounting, for those who may have graduated with that degree, are there a lot of good job opportunities available with that degree? Or are the jobs only if you pursue your CPA after the BSBA?

Appreciate your comments in advance. Thanks everyone.

Depends on what you want to do. There are tons of accounting jobs that don't require a CPA. You'd be better off doing some research of your own - look up accounting (accounting Analyst, accounting specialist, accounting clerk, accounting...whatever) and see what they require. There are also tons of accounting jobs that don't require a 4-yr degree, but they will be lower-level.

What I found in accounting over the years, in companies big and small, is there are a lot of opportunities to move up in the organization, even starting at the bottom, with no degree. I suggest starting with an entry-level job while you're getting your degree, to get some experience.

A lot of accounting positions (lower than CPA level) have software experience as a bigee on their requirements list, even more important than a bachelor's. If a client "invites" you as a QB Accountant, you can get certified as a QB ProAdvisor for free. Bills.Com also has a free certification that employers would love to see on your resume as well. I'd say it's more about skills, experience, and work quality that gets you anywhere when you're entry-level, whether you have a traditional or nontraditional degree.

I know someone who's making ~$45k salary straight out of highschool as a bookkeeper, so there's that.

Good morning and sorry to resurrect my old thread =)

I was thinking more about the BSBA in Accounting Degree path. If I were to pursue this path, it would be a mid-career switch with no work experience in accounting (and no certs as some mentioned)

Without getting the CPA, do you think it would be worth while to go that route for future accounting jobs? From my search (and maybe I’m searching wrong) it seems like BSBA accounting jobs salary is maybe only $55k or so to start and then around $70-75k max?

Feel free to chime in anyone. Thanks again. Happy Sunday! =)

I'm not sure that we can answer whether or not this would be a worthwhile change without knowing more about your current occupation and earning potential. Accounting can pay well, but work experience and location are huge factors.

I completed the CIS option instead of the accounting option. I currently work as a tax enforcement officer, which doesn't require a business degree at my agency. After a year of experience, I will qualify for a tax analyst or auditing position, and all they want is a business-related degree for those. It does help that I live in the capital of my state. From the job ads I've seen, it seems to be easier to get into government accounting without being a CPA. However, if you have an interest in working in tax, I've seen many private sector jobs ask for a CPA, JD, or EA designation. Anyone can get the EA designation from the IRS. It doesn't require a degree; you just need to pass three exams.

IRS Revenue Officer positions do not require a business degree. If you want to become a Revenue Agent, then you'll need the same number of accounting credits that a CPA needs. I think IRS special agents only need 15 accounting credits.

There is just no way to say whether it's a good bet for you. If you don't have any kind of degree, than most of the time, getting a degree is worthwhile - especially using our alternative methods and paying $7500 or less to get a degree. In that case, it is going to be well worth your time to invest in a degree, whichever kind it is.

Like was stated previously, it really depends on where you live as to how much you'll get paid. Just as with housing, careers are all about location, location, location. We can tell you how to get a degree, but only you can figure out if it's worth it!!

Hi. So does your BSBA not allow you to sit for the CPA?I know you need 150 hours but your previous degree + the TESU BSBA accounting should be sufficient for enough hours to sit for the exam??

I'm not in this field but I know the requirements are different between different states. You would have to look at your state's specific requirements to find out what you need before you can sit for the test.
