At a brick wall
#11
There may be resources available to you depending on the state you live in. Most states have programs to assist the unemployed and under-employed. For example, I live in NC and the Department of Commerce (Employment Security Commission) has several resources including job training and education assistance. In addition, there are grants available that would pay for education expenses at local community colleges.
My advice is to explore all of your options and use the free and low cost resources available. Lack of financial resources only hold you back if you allow it to.

My brother is in a similar financial situation as you. He actually donates blood and blood plasma 2 times a week. They pay him 25-35 dollars per donation.
Good luck, you can do this!

Edit: I will admit i spent most of my teenage and early twenties in and out of college. Here I am just turning 30 with 120+ college credits, exhausted financial aid and NO DEGREE. I work full time but can't afford to pay a traditional school to finish my degree. So, i am left researching ways ti making it happen. I have enrolled at Excelsior College and have 34 credits to graduate. Using this forum I have completed 15 additional credits since September.

I have come to the conclusion that I can't afford EC's Capstone course (addtl courses plus fees comes up to about $3500 - $4000) so I am yet exploring other others. This is my fault for not consistently pursuing my degree. However, I refuse to give up. I know that with God ALL things are possible.

FAFSA is simply an application for financial aid. As I clearly stated in my previous post, it simply figures out your EFC. Your EFC is used to figure out how much financial aid you qualify for. If you have little to no income, the chances of you not qualifying for financial aid are very slim. So, instead of making the assumption that the OP was "denied," I wanted to clarify some things because it is possible that the OP DOES qualify for financial aid. The OP has gotten confused on previous topics concerning her career path. If it turns out that the OP does qualify for financial aid, my comments will be more helpful than providing solutions to a problem that doesn't really exist.

Even though I wasn't implying anything about the OP's situation, things that can bar you from receiving financial aid are often things one should consider before receiving training or education for an occupation. Things like tax problems and criminal histories will keep people out of many types of jobs. If you don't like my comments, then don't read them.
Here's an example of people being denied financial aid because they filled out the FAFSA form incorrectly, not because they didn't really qualify for financial aid.

More Than 165,000 Students May Have Been Denied Financial Aid Because Of A Confusing Federal Form - Business Insider

Another common mistake is that people see a high EFC and assume they don't qualify for financial aid. I had an EFC of a few thousand dollars once, but it didn't mean that I was expected to pay a few thousand in tuition out of pocket. I qualified for enough aid to cover everything.

Thank you for those that left advice on overcoming this brick wall I feel like I'm at currently. I will consider it all.

I really didn't want to explain all the facts behind the denial but it seems like some of you assume I'm incorrect or dumb and don't understand FASFA. While I'm not an expert on this stuff like many of you note you are I do know what the words

Quote:The National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) indicates that you are in DEFAULT on one or more federal student loans. You are not eligible to receive any federal student aid until you resolve any loan default

mean. Smile

So yeah.. It's a long stressful story about how loans that I thought were paid years ago weren't and now I have to pay back again and can't go to school until they are paid...

The point is I am being honest...

I find myself getting more depressed than ever and think I might call a hotline . Nothing is working in my life and it seems like everywhere I go I have to defend myself. Sad

Thanks for the advice again. I'll consider it all.

My mom had this same issue when she tried to complete her degree at Capella University. She finished her Associate's degree in 1989. All she had to do was consolidate her loans and apply for a deferment. This took a month or 2 but she was able to restore her eligibility for federal aid.
Please look in to loan consolidation! !!

They have already been consolidated. I am paying them off via one company. It's a long complicated story that I've been trying to fix with FASFA for over 3 years.

I really don't feel comfortable sharing every ounce of information about my financial aid hell when I know there will be at least a handful of people who were pick on me because of it.

I really need to call a hotline now.

I completely understand and really there is no reason to go into detail. I was simply sharing options bases on experience. Good luck to you!!

I have been there, done that, got a t-shirt to prove it. It will all work out in the end. Just stay positive

You may want to take a look at Peoples University. They are a non profit, tuition free, accredited university. They offer degrees in Business Adminstration and Computer Science.
Associate in Arts - University of the State of New York / 1989
Undergraduate certificate in marketing, Ashworth College.

BSLS Excelsior college in progress. 6 classes to go

University of the People charges $100 for an end of course exam per course. The total cost of a bachelor's degree will be $4,000 plus the $50 application fee. A TESC BSBA could be completed for less unless one qualifies for one of UotP's scholarships (a lot are for non-U.S students). Another issue with University of the People is that it is nationally accredited, which means less acceptance by graduate schools. The Big 3 have the advantage of being regionally accredited. Schools like Liberty, APUS, and WGU do accept degrees from nationally accredited schools, though. I don't think APUS or WGU are any better than the Big 3. Nations University (also nationally accredited) offers theology degrees and only charges a $400 and something annual student services fee. That's probably the cheapest, most realistic option out there. Other colleges that offer free tuition tend to be highly-competitive and don't offer distance learning programs. It costs money to move to a different state.

If one cannot afford ALEKS, then one cannot afford Saylor. ALEKS is $20 per month. Saylor courses require a proctored exam in order to earn college credits. The proctoring service costs $25 per test. Brandman University and University of Memphis have a partnership with Saylor to accept some of their non-ACE/NCCRS courses, but you still need to pay for the proctored exams.

Videogamesrock found out about earning 30 free college credits from DreamDegree, but you have to attend one of their partner colleges.

Edmonds Community College was another option, but the application deadline passed on 11-30-15. You can still earn free college credits for a COSC degree with FEMA IS courses.

Okay, here's the first pick on you posts. You are wrong, Wrong, WRONG when you say that you don't have anything. You have a forum here and more than a handful of posters who have already posted and want to help you achieve your goal. And I've gotta say, when Sanatone and Cookderosa are in your corner, well, you really want to reconsider throwing in the towel.

Okay, second pick. This forum is a big tent with members who come with a wide range of experience and knowledge. You have Cookderosa who could probably be a college guidance counselor/advisor/whatever they're called for Harvard or MIT, and other forum members who bravely put it out there that they're babes in the educational woods. While you see folks picking on you, I see folks who are trying to ascertain where you fall in that spectrum. They want to assist you, but they want to make sure that they're giving you the correct assistance. Some forum members post a problem, and, when others have asked for clarification, it turns out that the original poster misunderstood something, or made an incorrect assumption and there isn't a problem, or the problem is not what the poster thought it was. We're not Harvard Law 101, but there is some Socratic method being used here.

Here's another suggestion. Let's say you're at the end of your financial rope. Go to the library. Get books out on subjects for courses you'll need to take or test out of in the future. See if your college has on-line study assistance for CLEPs, etc. Just because you're not actively earning credits does NOT mean that all learning activity has to end. When you get to a point where you have the opportunity to take classes or test out, studying now could put you in a position to take more courses per semester because your foundation of knowledge means you'll blow through them, or you'll be able to take 5 CLEPs/DSSTs in a day. Also, just getting out of the house might help you. You sound really blue.

I've come back to this forum many times in a blue funk sure and certain that I had reached an insurmountable obstacle, and I was wrong, Wrong, WRONG. With support and guidance, I got through Statistics, College Algebra, and other things that I thought would defeat me. I've got my degree.

You're going to get through this. You're going to get your degree, too. The first step is to take a step. Keep moving forward even if you're not moving as fast as you'd like. Know that we're here for you.
