Teaching Abroad (CELTA, TEFL, TESOL)
#1
Good Morning All!

I'm interested to see if anyone here has any input on teaching English overseas. Read through a few posts, but most of the links provided were no longer working.

MY plan is to start in Thailand or South Korea, but a requirement is to get one of the following certificates (CELTA, TEFL, TESOL). The info that I've been getting online seems a little shady. Salary goes up if you have these certificates, although I've heard that it is still possible to get a job without one....(not risking it)

If you know of any reputable schools offering these certificates or any info at all will be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I did A LOT of research on this over the years. For me it seemed the only international cert that everyone seemed to agree on was the CELTA. It is the most recognized and most respected, I wouldn't spend my money on anything else.

Also check out Dave's ESL Cafe it has been the biggest esl forum going since the late 90's.

Teaching overseas is my plan as well. I haven't started yet but I have researched a great deal on it and what I found out is that unless you're wanting to teach in the EU a CELTA may not be worth getting initially. I have not found a CELTA for under $2,200 and without 2+ years of post-degree experience you're not going to get $2,000+ value for the cert. The advantages for getting CELTA include being more proficient at doing your job and getting a job that has more competition. If you were to teach at a hagwon you probably wouldn't see any benefit to having a CELTA. What a lot of people do, and what I plan on doing, is to get a cheap online TEFL to satisfy the basic requirements and teach for a few years. Once you verified that you like the career, and you have 2+ years of exp under your belt, then go and get your CELTA.

Daves ESL cafe is highly recommended by a lot of people Dave's ESL Cafe
I would also check out Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TEFL/

I don't know how other countries are but if you do plan on doing something in China then stay far away from recruiters. You will be lied to, stolen from, and will not have a good experience.

A TEFL is not always required. It may depend on the type of employer (public school, private school, corporate training, etc.). In my experience if an employer desires a TEFL, they often do not care where it is from. YMMV depending on where you are applying.
