Online beginning Algebra?
#1
Does anyone know of a good cheap cost per credit Beginning Algebra course I could take to transfer it to EC to satisfy my AS Liberal Studies degree? My local campus has it but requires extensive pre-reqs etc. Thank you.

Edit:. I should say that I am currently using Aleks. But it is taking an extraordinary amount of time.

Check out Saylor's Beginning Algebra course. Credit Transfer Partner Schools | Saylor Academy
Course is free; proctor fee $25. Not sure about its difficulty level though.

You can take the Clep exam for College Algebra, it has no prerequisites. I don't know if Instantcert offers this course.

If you are struggling with Beginning Algebra on Aleks, you may want to back up and go through Pre-Algebra first. It seems counter-intuitive to go backward, but with mathematics you can't afford to have gaps in your knowledge. It is good to find a level that you are comfortable with and work forward from there. This will lower the stress level and allow you to retain what you are learning.

I would recommend ALEKS Math Essentials with Quick Tables for any one trying to jump into any level of Algebra and then finding that they can't grasp the concepts at a reasonable pace. I made the mistake of letting my first tudent jump right into College Algebra even knowing that they had done very poorly in math all their lives. Well my student got through College Algebra by shear dogged persistence but it took him 240 hours. With my next student of similar background, I started her out with Math Essentials. She assessed out of all basic math topics that she really understood and then went on with learning the essentials through this course all the way through the HS math she never understood and is now quite ready to complete College Algebra confidently and within reasonable time and no sweat effort.
