It seems counter-intuitive to go backward, but with mathematics you can't afford to have gaps in your knowledge. It is good to find a level that you are comfortable with and work forward from there. This will lower the stress level and allow you to retain what you are learning. I made the mistake of letting my first tudent jump right into College Algebra even knowing that they had done very poorly in math all their lives. Well my student got through College Algebra by shear dogged persistence but it took him 240 hours. With my next student of similar background, I started her out with Math Essentials. She assessed out of all basic math topics that she really understood and then went on with learning the essentials through this course all the way through the HS math she never understood and is now quite ready to complete College Algebra confidently and within reasonable time and no sweat effort. |
