I don't believe you can "teach" someone to be gay but I can certainly understand not wanting public schools to address that subject with one's child. I don't want anyone having that conversation with my son except his parents. I don't agree with that lifestyle and while I think the schools have a responsibility to protect all children from bullying and threats, the perceived solution to "expose" all children to LGBT instruction as a part of the sex ed curriculum so that they can be more accepting of the LGBT lifestyle/agenda, does not sit well with me. There is a push in public schools for the LGBT lifestyle to be "taught" or incorporated into school curriculum and I believe that is likely what the poster, Westerner, I believe...was referring to.

Uh oh, Westerner might want to find a new forum to post on, my homosexualitiness may indoctrinate her since we're in such close proximity.
I graduated high school in 2003 in Ohio, I knew 3 gay students there. I Was not friends with any of them, I don't think I even heard the word gay (or any variation thereof) uttered in a classroom ever until a student was threatening to beat up one of my gay classmates for the sole reason of being gay and the teacher came down on that bully hard for not treating others with dignity and respect and threatening violence on another human being.

If acknowledging that gay people exist counts as teaching homosexuality, there's no way we can see eye to eye.

Would you include in your definition of bully, someone who tells another member she "might want to find a new forum to post on"?

Apparently you didn't quite get my point with that post.

I am capable of teaching my child what he needs to know about sex. It has nothing to do with pretending that homosexuals do not exist. I also cannot pretend that adultery, fornication, rape, teen pregnancies, unwed mothers/fathers, and the like do not exist. However, I do not need to rely on a teacher - who may have questionable morals/values whether heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual -to instruct my child on matters of health, sexual reproduction, or the like. Every parent should be very concerned about the indoctrination that is occurring in their children's school. At the very least, if there are parents who would prefer that a school teach a topic that is so sensitive and personal for each child, then let it be an elective (optional).

All sex ed was opt in at my school. This just sounds very strange to me, this fearmongering.

The problem is, is that sex ed is a public health (and welfare, but that's a whole different subject) issue. Why do people in 3rd world countries keep having
ridiculous amounts of children.... because they don't get it, and don't have any sort of access to contraception. What does this cause? proliferation of AIDS and other diseases, famine...the list can really go on and on. This information needs to be covered in schools because it's so important that everyone understand how everything works, how to protect yourself and others from diseases etc.
I think I've mentioned previously that I'm military, last year I was in a barracks room full of other females approx 30 ranging between 18-40 years of age, some who were professional nurses, EMTs and combat medics various levels of education, but all high school graduates. We were having a discussion about if it was possible for a female to get pregnant during her period. With all the people in the room NO ONE including MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS could give a definitive answer. That is incredibly sad...
ETA:
There are still grown adults that believe that the "pull out" method is an effective form of birth control. "LGBT" topics in sex ed should be talked about not because they're LGBT and that's the PC thing to do, but because most acts practiced by LGBT people and practiced by straight people too... oral, anal etc. It's still very likely to transmit STD's these ways, again, another public health thing.
It's the job of the parents to teach the child the "appropriate" morals they believe about sex, you know waiting until you're married etc. (including if for religious reasons you disagree with homosexuality), but schools HAVE to teach accurate sex ed so this populace can finally get factual information, that just might save some dumb kid from getting pregnant or getting STDs, whether it's while they're in high school or a grown adult on their wedding night

I believe all schools give you the option to either opt-out or opt-in. I mean, students can even opt-out of dissecting frogs.

These are public health issues. What is wrong with addressing the spread of STDs among the gay population just like it's addressed for the heterosexual population? You forgot this from the CDC study.
Quote:In comparison 86% of all high schools that taught about abstinence as the most effective way to avoid pregnancy and STDs, 69% taught about marriage and commitment, 65% taught about condom efficacy, and 39% taught students how to correctly use a condom.
