BSBA in Computer Information Systems

ConflagrateCarl Wrote:I appreciate the advice/suggestion. I think I may take online classes with TESC or maybe even CTC and then try to CLEP/DSST most others. I don't know yet how everything works. It may be a completely ignorant question to ask, but why soooo many different organizations and ways to get credits? Is it just to get the most done in the shortest/cheapest way possible? For instance, I guess what I'm really wondering is, why don't people just take classes with TESC? I have always just taken courses at the school I was going to. It seems people don't do that so much with TESC. Any specific reason you know of that influences that thought pattern? Thanks!!

IMO it's the timing. It takes 3 months to complete a class, and I for one don't want to wait three months for something that I either may be able to test out of or take a similar class online with ALEKS/SL/Penn Foster and be able to be done WAY faster. My one computer class I took with PF online I was done in 4 hours and it cost $225. A similar class at TESC would've cost way more than that and the three months.

I think some people work better with the classroom experience while others may be older and do not have time after working 40+hours a week and dealing with a home life to actually go and sit in the class for a few hours.

Again just my opinion. Everyone is different and I'm not knocking one form or the other.

Makes perfect sense. I guess that's the information that I will dig up the more and more I research this degree program, etc. Because if there are classes with PF or somewhere like that, I would much rather do that. I'll have to look into it. I'm guessing you do most of your focus work with TESC, and your "random" electives and such with other places, whichever works the fastest and is financially reasonable? If I'm not mistaken, sounds pretty good to me. I'm sorry for the poor sentence structure, I'm juggling about 4 things at work and really need to get off of here. Thanks though!! Ciao!

No problem, glad I could help out.
I havent taken any classes at TESC, all have been elsewhere (again due to price and timing) If I choose to continue for my BA or BS I will have no choice but to take the capstone at TESC.

I feel the same way, I need to log off of here and actually do some work at work.

Where are you located that you would have to fly back into the US for CLEPs?

ConflagrateCarl Wrote:Thanks for the more in depth information. I can't do CLEP and DSST because of my location, so I'm kind of OOL there. What I would like to do, is MAYBE study for 5-8 CLEP or DSST tests, then fly back to the US, knock them all out in a few days, and then fly back. It would be about $650 + the cost of the exam, but I'm sure that's still cheaper than the 5 classes I would have to take. I don't know...just thinking out loud on that one. Big Grin

Ok, so I am pretty much just writing down everything you are saying about the CAP classes and COS classes. I understand what you're saying about them wanting 300 and 400 level courses to count towards a BS CIS focus. Makes perfect sense, and seems 100% reasonable from my viewpoint. Not sure if you'd want to, but maybe we could trade contact info (IM, Skype, etc) and talk offline more. I'm all about helping each other out as much as possible.

Oh and just as a heads up, if anyone is having actual IT issues, or issues with classes and certain aspects of IT, my technical knowledge is much more advanced than my knowledge of how TESC and credits work. Smile Just throwing that out there, feel free to pick my brain!!

I don't know what kind of tuition rate you're getting, but CTC is an excellent option for people with Texas residency. They have a lot of online courses in IT and computer science that are self-paced within 8 to 16 week terms. The great thing about TESC is that they will give upper level credit to community college courses. Just have them plan a course ahead of time to see how it will transcribe. I received a lot of UL credit for my CC courses when completing my first BA. The trick is to match the CTC or whatever course to an UL course offered by TESC or one that's in the PLA database and them ask them to approve it. There is, however, a limit to the number of community college courses you can transfer. I believe it's 80.

Ah ok, gotcha! Yea, not sure what the big deal is with the capstones...are they that bad? :/ I am located in the Caribbean, and believe it or not, there's not much here lol. So I would probably just fly into FL, since it's about a 2 hour flight and I could spend a few days there and fly back.

CTC gives a pretty good tuition rate. I was using TA to cover it and buying the books. That's cool about the UL credit given by TESC. I will definitely have to keep that in mind as I decide the best way to go about getting my BSBA.

Edit: As it stands right now with the evaluation they gave me for my BSBA in CIS, I currently have 64 credits applied and need 56. If I complete the ENS-314 class for my AAS, it will give me another 6 credits, which brings me down to 50. Then I will be doing the ENC-102 as well for my AAS, which is needed/counts towards my BSBA, so that brings me down to 47 credits I would need to fill. Seeing as how there are at least 5-6 classes I could CLEP/DSST out of the remaining courses I'd need to take (humanities, social science, gen ed electives...) I really think I'd only need about 30 or so credits I would have to actually "take". I could be wrong. We'll find out when I actually talk to my adviser on the 23rd or something like that.

Cheers!

The reason I earn credit from places other than Excelsior where I am enrolled is cost. Excelsior charges about almost twice what I pay at Fort Hays for my classes. Unfortunately, Fort Hays isn't as helpful with my CCAF transfer credits. Also, with Excelsior I have the opportunity to get a BS with a major rather than the Bachelor of General Studies at Fort Hays. My tuition assistance days are long behind me and I missed the post 9/11 GI Bill by two months. Cheap is very important.
