  Where do I graduate from?
Posted by: bmills072200 - 02-07-2008, 06:00 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

Okay, I am taking my first test on Saturday and I am am starting to question where I should go to school...I am currently registered at Strayer. In order to graduate from Strayer I need to take 12 actual courses at the school, which for Strayer translates to 54 credit hours. I am transfering in over 60 credits from previous schooling and I can CLEP out of enough so that I would only need to take the 12 other actual courses at the school or online through the school...

The problem is that Strayer is expensive and each class costs around $1200.

I have heard a few people talking about Excelsior and a couple of other schools.

Do these schools allow you to get all credits through CLEP or DSST or do you still have to take some actual courses through the school?

If so, then how does the school benefit from you being enrolled if they are not making any money from you paying tuition?

I hope this is not a stupid question. I just don't want to shell out any more money getting this degree done than necessary.

I APPRECIATE ANY ADVISE!!!

Thanks

  Essay for A & I Literature
Posted by: Drummerboy - 02-07-2008, 03:22 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

Hello All,

I'm going to take the A & I Literature CLEP tomorrow and had a question. Do they expect you to have a 3 point essay? The REA book gives long, almost rambling example essays with not as much structure as a 3 point. Which for the CLEP?

Thanks!

  Dantes vs. Clep
Posted by: mystified - 02-07-2008, 02:15 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

I've tested out of four clep tests and now I found that my university accepts Dantes although they don't test there. I was wanting to find out how dantes differs from clep. These are the tests I'm looking at:
Intro to World Religions
Human Resource Management
Organization and Behavior
Art of the Western World
Intro to Modern Middle Ages.

Help appreciated!

I am getting ready to take the A&IT test as well as the Marketing. When it comes to Marketing, are most of the questions multiple choice or are they fill in the blank?

Are all Penn Foster final exams paper based?

I have terrible hand writing and I've read that the final for Practical Algebra (Technical Math) is paper based. I wonder if it's the case with the rest of the courses (currently interested in English Composition and Visual C++)?

Hi -

I'd like some input/feedback from some of you. Smile

I am a TESC student and currently taking Intermediate Algebra as an online class. I suppose anyone who has done this knows the horrors of math online, especially when it is not your strongest point. It's not my weakest point either - I'm sort of in-between when it comes to math.

Since I've been away from any form of algebra for about 15 years, I decided to do this class online as a pre-req to my degree requirement of Quantitative Business Analysis that I will begin on April 1. I decided against taking the College Algebra CLEP, based on what I've read here and the fact that I've been away from algebra for so long.

Now, for my BSBA at TESC, I also have to take Statistics, which again I hear is a complete horror show in the online format. It doesn't sound to me like many are too successful at passing this the first time around. I work a full time workload in a three day work week and have an almost 4 year old and a 14 month old at home. Add in a husband who is next to never home on a regular basis because of his crazy work schedule and you will see that I just cannot do this class in a brick and mortar college.

I have begun to think about taking the Principles of Statistics DSST sometime in August. I figure since I'm doing Intermediate Algebra now (due to complete that the 3rd week of March) and will do QBA starting April 1 and finishing up the 3rd week of June, I think I might have a good basis fresh in my head to attempt the DSST for Stats. Or am I thinking wrong?

Thanks!

Wendy

  Finally Going Home
Posted by: CLEP101 - 02-07-2008, 02:28 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (8)

I'm finally going back home to Texas. It's been a long 15 months here in Baghdad. I just have one more day to stay alive so I can get on the plane on 8 Feb and fly the heck out of here. Big Grin I'm glad I found IC to keep me busy on my down time. I want to say that I was able to get a lot accomplished as far as education goes thanks to IC and everyone on this Forum. If I can get this much done over here, I should be able to hit the ground running when I get back to the US and knock out more tests.
Again, thanks to all.
See you when I see you. Smile

  Introduction and Goals
Posted by: duocdx - 02-07-2008, 12:51 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (2)

Hi all,

A few years ago I had to drop out of Boston University due to my mother needing an organ transplant. Thankfully, everything turned out well last year and I am ready to continue my education. I found this forum online while trying to figure out a way to get a legitimate degree quickly (I feel as if I need to catch up after missing out on 2+ years of schooling) and I think that the service that InstantCert provides is really great. Definitely hoping to put it to good use!

That said, what I really want to do is finish my degree at BU but I want to do it via Distance Learning just in case anything unexpected occurs. I plan on completing an Associate in Science degree at Charter Oak and then hopefully transferring back into BU to complete the Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree that they offer online.

This is my current plan to fulfill the degree requirements at Charter Oak, please feel free to give me any comments or suggestions.

General Education Requirements (40+ Credits)
Written Communication - 2 semesters of Writing at BU (6 credits)
Oral Communication - DANTES Principles of Public Speaking (3 credits)
Critical Thinking - 1 semester General Chemistry with lab at BU (4 credits)
Information Literacy - Not sure, COSC and Excelsior are both expensive (1 credit)
Ethical Decision Making - DANTES Ethics in America (3 credits)
U.S. History/Government - AP U.S. History (6 credits)
Non-U.S. History or Culture - DANTES Introduction to World Religions (3 credits)
Global Understanding - DANTES Environment and Humanity (3 credits)
Literature and Fine Arts - CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature (6 credits)
Social/Behavioral Sciences - AP Psychology (3 credits)
Mathematics - CLEP College Mathematics (6 credits)
Natural Science - 1 semester Evolutionary Biology with lab at BU (4 credits)

Total: 48 credits

Elective Credits
CLEP Information Systems and Computer Applications (3 credits)
DANTES Here's to your Health (3 credits)
AP U.S. Government (3 credits)
Introduction to Logic taken at local community college (3 credits)
Total: 12 credits

That'd be a total of 60 credits, allowing me to complete an Associates degree and giving me the required number of credits to enroll in BU's BLS program. Once again, please feel free to give me any comments or suggestions Big Grin I know this is a bit long, but I really just felt I ought to introduce myself and have my plan written down somewhere for people to critique. Biggest issue for me is to figure out where to get the Information Literacy requirement done. Does Charter Oak or Excelsior require a proctored exam to be taken for their versions of these courses? That's really the only thing holding me back from just doing the course via Penn Foster. Any other suggestions on how to complete this requirement without having to take a proctored exam would be much appreciated!

Ideas and misconceptions from a new guy.
Posted by: dirtybob - 02-06-2008, 05:16 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

Hey everyone, new guy checking in. Been hanging out a bit and reading back posts to get an idea of what Im in for as far as testing out a BA.

It seems that it is possible to almost completely test out a BA, and take a few online courses to make up the difference. In my head it would work something like this:

1. Enroll in an online school that accepts both Dantes and Clep credits.

2. Get with the adviser and figure out both what you want to achieve and how to accomplish that.

3. Study like crazy, and test like a madman.

4. Finish out my BA with online courses.

5. Happy Dance.

I understand it can be done differently, but thats the plan i have in my head. Just a basic outline.

Now, on to some questions:

1. The tests(Clep/Dantes) are taken at a approved testing center. I.E. Local College. Is that correct?

2. This rout to a BA is cheaper than the traditional four year University. Is there a baseline to help figure out how cheap? Say you go in not having any transferable credits. How much should someone plan on laying down?

3. This rout also seems faster, four years VS as fast as you can take and pass the exams. But how fast is that, Ive read about the "60 day BA" but Im sure that is the exception rather than the rule. What are some real life examples of getting it done?

4. Is there a list of "diploma mill" type testing facilities to be avoided? Im sure if I stick with the recommendations of the big three I should be ok, but hey, the more you know.

Still just trying to wrap my mind around this. Trying for some general information that i haven't been able to find in the archives.

DB
