First exam in 3 years tomorrow
Posted by: kimberlyaz - 02-10-2008, 10:36 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (5)

After a promotion at work and a transfer to a new city/state, my efforts toward completing my degree have been on the shelf for over a year and a half.

I've actually completed all of my core (read: upper division) requirements for my major but have a number of lower division electives to complete. I got on the right track back in '05 and took 3 DANTES tests in a 2-month period of time, passing them all.

So -- tomorrow will mark my first exam since that time. I picked a relatively easy one (DANTES Here's to Your Health) to get warmed up with, since I work in the health insurance field and the forum notes indicate that it's a lot of common sense. I've been studying the IC flashcards for a few days on and off and have hit them harder tonight.

I'm a little disappointed that I couldn't find any DANTES test centers in town that offer computerized testing, so I'll be in suspense for a month or so before getting my score. But just hopping back on the horse tomorrow will be an important step.

Best of luck to all of you that are also testing tomorrow and thanks to all who have posted feedback about the exam.

Regards,
Kimberly

  Frustrated and need to vent...
Posted by: bmills072200 - 02-10-2008, 10:27 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

Okay, so I'm all signed up to take my first test this past Saturday on Principles of Supervision. I get to the testing center early and I am ready to go.

We go through the process of signing in and when the proctor has to sign in their information, the guy does not know the correct user name and password. At this point he tries to contact someone with the testing people that issue the passwords, but the people who typically work on that apparently do not work on weekends. After waiting for over an hour, I left and asked him o call if he figured it out. I call back 3 hours later and the guy says that he can't figure it out and I would not be able to take the test. I was furious. I have read some other post about other problems that occured on Saturday, so I am trying not to take it personally...

I am going to try to take the test tomorrow (Monday)...we'll see how that goes...I hope this is not an omen of some sort preparing me for failure...

  Dantes technical issue experience..beware
Posted by: studyingcindy - 02-10-2008, 09:28 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (3)

I just took the Dantes Statistics test on Saturday (and passed Smile ). Anyway, I wanted to warn you guys about my experience. When I got to the college, I had to wait almost 40 minutes because they said they were having problems with their computers. Not a problem, it gave me a few more minutes to study. Anyway, they called me back and assigned me to a computer. I signed in to the DSST site, my information came up and then the proctor had to sign in. This then brought us to another screen. All I know was it gave another name for the person taking the test, NOT ME . I notified the proctor right away, and we backed out of it, and started over. The second time, it had my name right. Had I not noticed, I'm not sure what would of happened. All I know is I used my sign on, my name came up just fine... the proctor did her thing and her thing worked fine, then bam, another name shows up.... I don't know if I would of not gotten credit applied to me or what. Anyway, just be very aware when you are signing in to these test and make sure it's your name that comes up twice.

Need 4 UL exams, help me decide which 4
Posted by: Southpaw - 02-10-2008, 02:40 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (6)

I need 11 UL credits so I figure I need to take 4 UL exams. I had originally planned on doing a focus in Psychology, but after getting my evaluation from Excelsior I don’t need as many credits as I thought I would. I need 6 more LL Arts and Sciences, 6 UL Arts and Sciences and 5 UL applied professional or Arts and Sciences. Rather than take the CLEP’s Human Growth and Development and Educational Psychology I’m thinking about taking A&I Lit instead since it would knock out the 6 LL Arts and Sciences I need with one test instead of two. If I do that then I can’t get the focus in Psychology (which isn’t a very big deal for me) so that opens up other options for the 4 UL tests I need.

I’ve already taken Civil War and Abnormal Psychology. Out of the following tests which to you recommend? Or feel free to recommend one I don’t list. Remember I need 6 UL credits of Arts and Sciences and the other 5 credits can be whatever as long as they are UL.

• ECE Research Methods in Psychology
• ECE Foundations of Gerontology
• ECE Psychology of Adulthood and Aging
• ECE Social Psychology
• ECE World Populations
• DSST Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Credit for ALEKS Corp (McGraw Hill) Online courses in College Algebra & Statistics
Posted by: gus - 02-10-2008, 12:59 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (764)

This may be of interest to all of us who are looking to fulfill the Math and Statistics requirement. I had previously posted some info in another thread but I thought I'd expand on the subject here.

ACE had evaluated a few ALEKS online courses for credit:

1. Beginning Algebra (ALEK-0001)
2. Business Statistics (ALEK-0008)
3. College Algebra (ALEK-0003)
4. College Algebra with Trigonometry (ALEK-0004)
5. Intermediate Algebra (ALEK-0002)
6. Introduction to Statistics (ALEK-0007)
7. PreCalculus (ALEK-0005)
8. Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences (ALEK-0009)
9. Trigonometry (ALEK-0006)

Excelsior had confirmed that ALEK-0003 and ALEK-0008 would fulfill the Math and Statistics requirements of the business degrees.

To access the independent online courses you pay $20 a month (you can use the subscription to access all of their online courses without paying extra fees). You can even try it for two days for free. I was getting really excited about the whole thing after signing up, I was instantly hooked to their learning system. OK, I kept thinking this is too good to be true, getting college credit after completing the learning requirements (and perhaps completing a final assessment with or without a proctor)

Now for the catch. I contacted ALEKS corp to inquire about the process of getting transcripts/college credit for course completion as their website had no details about this. A few emails later I find out that you can't get college credit from ALEKS directly instead you have to take ALEKS assisted courses through college. While that makes sense, it still doesn't explain why ACE would evaluate the ALEKS online courses if they're going to be part of a college course. I was unable to get a complete listing of institutions that use ALEKS, only two examples (University of Phoenix and San Joaquin Delta College).

I was thinking maybe one could take a proctored exam using ALEKS in order to get college credit. A quick search on the internet shows that this may be possible. Take a look at the following example:

http://jti.ladwp.com/view/layouts/docs/a...amInfo.pdf

This is from the Joint Training Institute - Los Angeles Department of Power, Water & IBEW Local 18 Joint Training Institute

The PDF document states "If you have completed an ALEKS/NetTutor course and are interested in receiving a college credit recommendation, you are eligible to sit for a proctored final exam. Students who score a 70% or better on the proctored final exam will receive a certification for college credit recommendation."

Now I wonder if anyone knows how or has been able to get credit through ALEKS. I will try and see if the advisors at Exlcesior have more information on this.

Question about retesting a failed exam...
Posted by: Shadowless - 02-10-2008, 12:53 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (1)

I was wondering how many people retested after failing a test after the 6 month wait period?

My question is, when you retook the test was it the same version? How does that work? I realize most tests have two versions so I was just wondering how that worked?

Just received Excelsior Evaluation for New Student
Posted by: CoreyH - 02-10-2008, 12:18 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (4)

Hello forum,

I just received the following evaluation for the BS in Marketing Degree offered by Excelsior College. I was hoping that someone more experienced in working with Excelsior could assist me in determining the quickest or most efficient way (i.e. classes, CLEP and other testing) to achieve my degree goals from my current evaluation of 56 credits transferred in. When I finish with Excelsior, I would like to have the following degrees completed:

1. Associate Degree in a Business Program (on the way to the BS)
2. BS in Business with a Marketing Concentration
3. Then potentially also complete a BS in Political Science Degree

Below is what my evaluation states that I still need to complete:

General Education Component
You need at least 22.00 credits in arts & sciences
- at least 6.00 credits in social sciences electives
- Macroeconomics
- Microeconomics
- Statistics

Information Literacy Requirement
There are several ways to satisfy the Information Literacy requirement. As the universe of information grows and technology continues to transform learning, information literacy (accessing academic information electronically, selecting credible resources, etc.) becomes increasingly important. You may demonstrate competency in this area by successfully completing the Excelsior College course "Information Literacy" (INL 102) or an approved course from the regionally accredited college of your choice. You must earn a minimum of one semester hour in Information Literacy with a grade of C or higher in order to complete the requirement. Please visit http://www.excelsior.edu and click on the Excelsior College courses link for information pertaining to INL 102.

II. Business Component
You need:
at least 19.00 more credits in business subjects to include:
- Introduction to Accounting I (Financial)
Please Note: ACCT*205 Acct Prin I will be reviewed upon enrollment for the Acct I requirement

- Introduction to Accounting II (Managerial)
- Business Law
- Managerial Finance or Financial Management
- Introduction to Marketing
- Business Policy**
- 3.00 credits of advanced business electives
-15.00 credits in BMK subjects to include:
(of these, 9.00 credits must be at the advanced level)
- Consumer Behavior
- Marketing Management
- Market Research
- Approved Marketing Electives

**Please note that the Business Policy core requirement must be completed by taking Excelsior College's on-line course, Bus 495: Business Strategy.

Ethics Requirement
You have not yet satisfied the ethics requirement. Credits from your course or examination in ethics will be applied to the humanities (arts and sciences) or business electives, depending on title, number, level and content.

Organizational Behavior Requirement
You have not yet satisfied the organizational behavior requirement. Credit from your course or examination in organizational behavior will be applied to the social sciences (arts and sciences) or business electives, depending on title, number, level, and content.

  A question for the pro's...
Posted by: Arkansas Red - 02-10-2008, 05:09 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

First, I'm a long time lurker first time poster, so Howdy!

Secondly, here's my situation: I am 67 hours into my degree. Assuming I pass the following DSST's/CLEP I should graduate end of next spring:
1) Rise & Fall of the USSR (Took it and waiting the results. This should be the week.)
2) Intro. to World Religions (currently studying for...)
3) Analyze & Interpret
4) English Lit.
5) American Lit.

The idea is that after World Religions the Literature CLEP's (coupeled with what I take in class) oughta be able to help round out the learning from the study guides.

Given all that did I do as my friend stated and pick every hard clep and dsst to do?

Thanks in advance.

~AR

P.S. Rise & Fall was an eye opener.

I passed 3 exams this week and it put me over the 60 credit mark. I'm at 61 waiting for my U.S History 2 score I might be at 64. I'm trying to get up to 90 by the end of the month. I've been studying my butt off; I can honestly say that it feels really good to learn. It's nice to watch the elective process and finally know how it works lol
