  Best Degree Plan Help
Posted by: burbuja0512 - 04-13-2026, 02:19 PM - Forum: Degree Planning Advice - Replies (2)

Hi all,

I have my very old COSC degree and now my DD is in high school wanting to start testing out!   I have been scouring the site and trying to get caught up and wondering the best place to get started.

TESU is looking like a good option so far.  Where are the latest degree plans or can someone point me in the direction of the MOST RECENT degree plans that would be good for my DD to use as a starter template.   I'm getting confused because a lot that are on the site are old like my knowledge, so I'm hoping that someone can give me a few links of the newer and more up to date templates. Happy to look at options that aren't TESU if you have good ones too!

Regarding what type of degree we are looking for... not entirely sure yet and we are still weighing all of our options.     I used to be so good at figuring out degree plans and now I just feel lost!!!!  Thanks for your help.

Angelo State University MA in Mental Health and Wellness Counseling
Posted by: staceydiane - 04-13-2026, 01:25 PM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (11)

I got accepted to this program and I'm starting in June.  I'm really excited (and nervous) about it.  Because of my TESU GPA (3.5) Angelo State gave me the Distinguished Graduate Scholarship ($2000 for the year) which gives me an in-state tuition waiver.

I spent months researching graduate programs. (I overthink EVERYTHING.)  I don't think I want to end up an LPC, but Angelo State has an LPC bridge program should I change my mind.  Right now my career goal is working in human services, but addictions counseling also interests me, so I might go for that later.

In the Summer Semester, I'm taking Theories of Counseling and Social and Cultural Influences.

Free credit-bearing certificates in Criminal Justice/Criminology?
Posted by: EliEverIsAHero - 04-12-2026, 08:48 PM - Forum: Free Courses and Certificates and Good Deals - Replies (1)

I am currently working in a Criminal Justice-related role and feel like I could benefit from formal education in the field as job-related training.

Bonus points if the focus is on Investigation/Investigative Analysis (many decades ago my dream job was to be a Private Investigator; that may or may not ever happen at some point in my life - it probably won't, but a certificate that involves related training would be deeply appealing).

Can anyone suggest free certificates, ideally credit-bearing, in this field?

Determining countability of a journal toward a PhD by Published Work
Posted by: EliEverIsAHero - 04-12-2026, 06:07 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (11)

How does one determine if a journal will be seen as credible for the purposes of a future/potential PhD by Published Work?

Should one, for example, be suspicious of newer journals? Low-impact journals? Solely-online journals? Policy/practitioner-oriented journals versus more stringently academic ones? Would a potential doctoral thesis committee refuse to count an article/paper in some of these types of publication?

Thoughts on this op-ed in Chronicle of Higher Education?

The author is quite scathing toward what he argues is the "Business School-ification" of the Humanities.

TEFL/TESOL abroad at university or adult ed level: still doable without a CELTA?
Posted by: EliEverIsAHero - 04-11-2026, 08:53 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (2)

Many years ago, when Fred Flintstone was still alive, I did 2 TEFL/TESOL certificates. These have served me well for teaching English to foreigners, adults and children online, but when looking at the market for physical classroom teachers, it's very difficult to avoid postings for teaching children: which, speaking for myself, I don't feel particularly well-calibrated to do; classroom management is more difficult, for one thing, versus adults who want to be there, are eagerly pursuing a language requirement to finish a Bachelor's or certification, or have a professional interest in learning.

The market for teaching adults (ESL) however, is dominated by requirements for a CELTA/DELTA. Is it still feasible to teach ESL to adults with a TEFL/TESOL certificate, or is it necessary to bite the bullet and spring for a CELTA, even though that seems like overkill?

Has anyone here done the "digital nomad" lifestyle while pursuing distance learning?
Posted by: EliEverIsAHero - 04-11-2026, 08:46 AM - Forum: Graduate School Discussion - Replies (1)

e.g. taught English/one's native language remotely, created virtual trainings, or done other remote work from a country other than one's homeland while pursuing a distance learning degree?

If anyone here has done this, what were the main challenges or impediments in terms of money and time?

Open Institute of Technology Professional Doctorate in Applied AI
Posted by: icecubetr - 04-11-2026, 08:07 AM - Forum: Doctorate Degree Discussion - No Replies

OPIT – Open Institute of Technology has launched a Professional Doctorate in Applied Artificial Intelligence, starting in September 2026 and delivered entirely online.

"Duration: 6 terms/ 3 or 6 years
Next intake: September 2026
Tuition Fee: €24000
Mode of attendance: Online / Full or Part time"

OPIT programs and degrees are accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA). The Malta Further and Higher Education Authority applied to join the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education in 2023, but its application was rejected on 11 October 2024 after reviewers found it only partially compliant with the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG)—particularly because some reforms and procedures had not yet been fully implemented in practice. MFHEA appealed the decision, but in March 2025 the appeal was rejected, making the original decision final. EQAR later clarified that non-registration does not automatically mean an agency is illegitimate, but registration is an important benchmark of European-level quality assurance alignment. As of now, MFHEA is still not listed on EQAR, though it has stated it plans to address the issues and reapply in the future. https://www.eqar.eu/register/agencies/agency/?id=81
