Just passed Educational Psychology (how to pass with only one or two days of study)
Posted by: alejandro527 - 08-13-2014, 02:25 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Prior to my current work situation, I have never heard of CLEP testing. What brought me to taking a CLEP test were two requirements that would require me to work again. I currently work for the NYC Department of Education as a substitute teacher. They require that you either have two education courses taken in undergrad, take random courses that the union gives out or take two CLEP exams. I decided to opt for the CLEP and I am glad I did.

I am writing this post because I know many people in the NYC area that take this test or the Human Growth and Development one. My best advice for substitute teachers is to both sign up for Instantcert and purchase the REA ebook. I got a 57 on the test with only two days of studying and no prior psychology or education knowledge. Heres how I did it:

1. Take initial exam receive score and gauge your knowledge on this topic.
2. Read REA book front to back (The book is an easy quick read). First 20 pages or say is explaining the test and the last 20 are allocated for practice exams.
3. Go through each topic in instantcert one by one and attempt to fill in the blanks
4. This is something that I did for myself. I typed down each blank and explanation(paraphrased) on a document.
5. Went over my "Review Sheet"
6. Took the last practice test in the REA book

The psychological theorists and topics that are of importance and require more studying:
Piaget (so many questions) Learn his terms (easy) and his four stages of development
Vygotsky Social theorist (The exam likes to test your knowledge between Vygotsky and Piaget and their differences)
Albert Bundura
Erik Erikson
Lawrence Kohlberg levels of moral development (lots on this guy right here)

This is by no means a method or technique to study for tests for the last minute. I do not suggest waiting two days before any exam to study, especially CLEP exams considering the exams cover a semesters worth of work. However, if you end up taking a test with only two days of studying you can try to study for it the way I did. I'm taking the Human Growth and Development test on Friday and I will be studying the same way. I'll let you guys know how I do. Once again this is all last minute test taking. I left to Texas for an emergency and had to do this in a rush. When I got back to Brooklyn I found out my education courses were not accepted and thats how i got to this position.

I'll post again on Friday!

Ok so I applied to all 3 and seemed to get the most credit from Excelsior but not sure if that is my best bet.

Excelsior - 72 credits thinking of BPS in IT
COSC- 62 Credits thinking of ??
TESC - 58 credits but I think I have up to 10 more outstanding and thinking of BSAST in Technical Studies

My first choice was COSC but I'm not so sure now and would love input from anyone. Below is from Excelsior --

FREE Course on Creating PLA Portfolio for TESC from Saylor
Posted by: PaintTheSunset - 08-13-2014, 11:15 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - No Replies

Hi Everyone,

I just found this on Saylor's site. Saylor is offering a free version of TESC's PLA-100 and PLA-200. These free Saylor versions are NOT for credit, but can be used to to show you how to create the PLA portfolio for credit assessment. This can be done either as a preview of the for-credit, tuition required, or even instead of taking the for-credit, tuition-required versions of the PLA courses at TESC. PLA just got more affordable. Smile

  Which Big 3???
Posted by: NurseLady - 08-13-2014, 11:04 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (11)

Which one of the big 3 should I choose to get a AA or AS. I'm just ready to complete a degree and walk down the aisle. I am considering a BA in Health Care Management at Excelsior because they will give me 26 credits for my LPN license. I talked to COSC as well and they will give me 16 credits for a BA in I think it was Health Studies. Just curious...Thanks!!!

  TECEP English Composition I
Posted by: laughter - 08-12-2014, 11:09 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (11)

Is the availability period for a registered TECEP 1 month or 3 months?

Does anyone have suggestions on how to prepare for the TECEP English Composition I? The content guide mentions use of Harbrace Handbook, but does not supply much info in terms of sample questions or suggested preparation.

  Please Help! Need Fast Credits
Posted by: saiga - 08-12-2014, 06:58 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (9)

Okay, I finally got my TESC Academic Evaluation for my BSBA General Management. I am so close! Everything lines up as I intended with the exception of my BYU Japanese Exam. Which they did not accept. This basically means that I am 8 credits shy of my 120. I need 2 general electives and 6 free electives. I could take the NYU Language Exam but on the site they say that it could take as many a 8 weeks to get the results back. I really want to have everything in order for the December graduation. I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket with this NYU test so I need some other options. I am looking especially at Straighterline courses because those have been very fast for me in the past. So what are some fast Straighterline or other courses I can take? Here are the SL courses I've already taken:

Accounting II
Managerial Accounting
Financial Accounting
Business Communication

Here is my Academic Evaluation. I also have Penn Foster Strategic management and Business & Technical Writing course transcripts on the way, so those are not included.

Test Out Plan for TESC's BA in Biology
Posted by: sanantone - 08-12-2014, 06:17 PM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - No Replies

Sanantone's BA in Biology - Degree Forum Wiki

I know I left out Biology I and Chemistry I from Straighterline and Saylor. I did this because you would still have to find Biology II and Chemistry II at another college making it more expensive than just taking the CLEPs to satisfy both requirements.
