Why do they classify them though? I guess im being to literal but just curious if they mean anything when they are all said and done.
Or is it like intro to psychology would be lower level
then say mental health counseling would be upper level because its advanced?

They designate 100-200 level as lower level because they are considered freshman / sophmore level courses and would be courses required for an associates degree. 300-400 level is upper level and considered junior/senior level courses so the content is harder and more involved and usually builds on the lower level content in the same area. These would be bachelor / masters level courses. The UL courses are just more involved, intense studies of lower level courses. So think of an example as an intro to psych class as lower level with research methods in psychology as an upper level more advanced study of a specialized area within psychology. I hope this helps. I believe the levels are all content driven, the harder more involved the higher the level.

The traditional numbering of college classes:
100-series for freshman - a broad survey course suitable as general education credits for students in any major, no prerequisites, usually lecture-only
200-series for sophomores - may require a 100-series class as prerequisite, topic generally more focused, may include class participation
300-series for juniors - focused, has prerequisites, more writing intensive, class discussions normal, still suitable for non-majors
400-series for seniors - specific topic, writing-intensive, small class size, includes class discussions and research papers, may be restricted to students in the major
Examples are better illustrations, so here are selections from Cornell's history offerings next fall:
HIST1510: Introduction to Western Civilization
HIST2520: Modern Eastern Europe
HIST3710: World War II in Europe
HIST4740: Topics in Modern European Intellectual and Cultural History
