Depends on the job. If you want an accounting job, most companies won't take an AA. It's either entry-level, with no AA needed, or higher up with some experience, or a BA. An AA just doesn't do anything for you.
But I also say to check the jobs you are wanting. If a job says AA, then great - get an AA. But MOST jobs don't say that - they require no degree, or a BA. There's just not a lot in the middle.

I think everyone's situation is different. I'm in the IT field and already employed. I agree with you AS is probably worthless for most jobs. But if I get to put AS on my resume for a year while I wait to get my BS and if it doesn't cost anything than I don't see why not.

Stop trying to talk yourself into it. It is almost always completely worthless. Focus on the BA only. Basically it's a second high school diploma. I'm in IT, and the AA/AS is completely worthless. If there is a very rare unicorn job that requires an associate as a minimum rather than a high school diploma, it is extremely likely you will still be competing against many applicants that have bachelors degrees. I just got through hiring another IT position with no BA requirement and I ended up with 16 candidates cleared by HR who all have BA degrees for a lower level IT position. Not a single person had just AA or high school.
It's way better to spend the time and money that you would have been spent on an AA pursuing IT certifications.

Sure its not on every job but its not unknown. Here's one I just found just now poking around on Indeed;
"Qualifications:
Associates Degree or equivalent from two-year College or technical school in Information Technology, Information Security/Assurance, Engineering or related field of study; at least two years of related experience and/or training (in addition to experience requirements below); or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Bachelor Degree in Information Technology, Information Security/Assurance, Engineering or related field of study preferred; at least four years of related experience and/or training (in addition to experience requirements below); or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. "
